Solved: No internet access. Help!!! DNS not responding

2K views 6 replies 2 participants last post by  etaf

So I'm trying to configure my wireless router (wrt54g) without any luck, I updated the firmware to the latest, tired all the internet configurations I can think of yet still no internet through the router.

I have reset the router multiple times over the past week trying to get a connnection without any avail. Computers can connect to the router both wirelessly and wired but no internet access. Diagnositics tool saids DNS not responding. Currently my router settings are set to stock. When computers are connected directly from the modem (adsl) it works flawlessly.

I thought maybe the fact that the modem and the router have the same ip address that might be the problem. could it possibly be? SO
I tried changing the ip adress of the wrt54g, then it said to do an ip relase/renew. I went into cmd prompt, typed in ipconfig/ release got the error " no operation can be performed on local area connection as it has its media discconnected"

this is what I get when I enter ipconfig/all

this is what I get when I enter ipconfig/all
from the router or the modem ?

can we see an ipconfig /all from both the modem and router (just tell us which it is in first post)

make and model of the modem

also have you tried a full power cycle
------------------------------------------------------------------------

How to power cycle

"power cycle" process to reboot or reset the modem/router
  • Switch off all the devices modem, router and computers also unplug their power cables.
  • Wait at least 1 to 5 minutes,
  • Plug the power cords back in, but don't switch them on.
  • First turn on the modem and then wait for a few minutes for it to settle and all the lights to become stable.
  • Next switch on the router (if a seperate device) and then wait for a few minutes for it to settle and all the lights to become stable.
  • Now turn on your computer, You should now be able to access the Internet.

ok - so you are connecting two routers together - which is why it is not working

so it maybe possible to change the modem to be in bridge mode - need make and exact model
OR
this is how to connect two routers together

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Connecting two (or more) SOHO broadband routers together

Connecting two (or more) SOHO broadband routers together
From a John Will Post :)

http://library.techguy.org/wiki/Connecting_two_SOHO_broadband_routers_together

Note: The "primary" router can be an actual router, a software gateway like Microsoft Internet Connection Sharing, or a server connection that has the capability to supply more than one IP address using DHCP server capability. No changes are made to the primary "router" configuration.

Configure the IP address of the secondary router(s) to be in the same subnet as the primary router, but out of the range of the DHCP server in the primary router. For instance DHCP server addresses 192.168.0.2 through 192.168.0.100, I'd assign the secondary router 192.168.0.254 as it's IP address, 192.168.0.253 for another router, etc.

Note: Do this first, as you will have to reboot the computer to connect to the router again for the remaining changes.

Disable the DHCP server in the secondary router.

Setup the wireless section just the way you would if it was the primary router, channels, encryption, etc.

Connect from the primary router's LAN port to one of the LAN ports on the secondary router. If there is no uplink port and neither of the routers have auto-sensing ports, use a cross-over cable. Leave the WAN port unconnected!

This procedure bypasses the routing function (NAT layer) and configures the router as a switch (or wireless access point for wireless routers).

For reference, here's a link to a Typical example config using a Netgear router
