Well, again I have no internet connection, right when I need to file my taxes. My roommates are no longer using my computer for now on. Anyway...here's what's happening.

PC, Win 98SE (I know, i need to upgrade).
I have run Spy-Bot, Ad-Aware, and AVG Free virus scan, all clean. Also run again in safe mode, all clean.
I run winipcfg and have an ip address, can release and renew no problem. My roommate has pinged my computer with his on the network no problems. Just no connection to any internet linked software. No pages found in MS IE, Firefox; no connection on any chat service, email or piece of software that using the internet to update.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!
    Nate

    Follow these steps:
    1. Go to Start > Run... and type in cmd. Click OK.
    2. Type tracert google.com and hit Enter. Let the tracert run.
    3. When the tracert is done, right-click within the window and go to Select All. Press Enter to copy the results to the clipboard. Paste them back here in your next reply.

Okay I ran it...I can't copy and past since I am using my laptop to get online and trying to fix my desktop. That's another thing I guess I left out. My laptop running wireless and my roomates laptop and desktop running wireless all are working fine on the internet. Just my PC desktop that is directly connected is not working. And I have tried different ports on the router, no changes in outcome.

Okay so this is what it says....(I have to type command or us the MS-DOS prompt screen. If I use CMD in the Run menu I get an error message that it is not a recognized command.)

    C:\WINDOWS\Desktop\tracert google.com
Unable to resolve target system name google.com.

    Thanks again!

    Alright, try this:
    1. Go to Start > Run... and type in cmd. Click OK.
    2. Type in ipconfig /flusdns just as it appears.
    3. You should get:

      Windows IP Configuration

Successfully flushed the DNS Resolver Cache.
    How's it going now?

    I get...

    Windows 98 IP Configurator
    Command line options:
    /All - Display detailed information.
/Batch [file] - Write to file or ./WINIPCFG.OUT
    /renew_all - Renew all adapters.
    /release_all - Release all adapters.
    /renew N - Renew adapter N.
    /release N - Release adapter N.

I did a renew all and still nothing. Damn this is frustrating. I have fixed this kind of issue before, usually it's a adware or spyware issue..but this is something more. Thanks.

    Download Hoster from here:
    www.funkytoad.com/download/hoster.zip
Run the program and press Restore Original Hosts, OK, and Exit Program.

How's it going now? If it still doesn't work...

Click here to download HJTsetup.exe: http://www.thespykiller.co.uk/files/HJTSetup.exe
    Save HJTsetup.exe to your desktop.

Double click on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop.
By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Hijack This.
Continue to click Next in the setup dialogue boxes until you get to the Select Addition Tasks dialogue.

Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.
Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
At the final dialogue box click Finish and it will launch HijackThis.
Click on the Do a system scan and save a log file button. It will scan and then ask you to save the log.

Click Save to save the log file and then the log will open in Notepad.
Go to Edit > Select All then go to Edit > Copy to copy the entire contents of the log.

Come back here to this thread and paste the log in your next reply.
DO NOT have HijackThis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

My daughter's computer lost connection last night, after trying everything else, she did a system restore, you could try that.

    EicksRocks:

I will try your most recent recommendation as soon as I get home from work tonight. Should post the results by tomorrow. Thanks again for all your help, this is the worst loss of connection I have ever had, I am really stumped on this one. I do appreciate you checking back in on this.

OK - you are going to need to wait for someone who can analyze the log. I am not an expert. :(
