    Hello there.

I've been having trouble for months now.
I have an asus striker II formula mobo,
and a supreme fx II pcie.
and am having major issue's trying to get my sound back.

There is a red speaker icon on the taskbar that says "no audio output device is installed"
it was fine one minuite, then sound dissapeared the next, for no apparent reason.

I've tried downloading the soundmax drivers from the asus website.
However, when attempting to install them, an error pops up saying "smwdm.sys is missing"
i have no idea what that is,
and i have downloaded the same drivers from various sites, and each say the same thing.

Then, i found a site where i could download smwdm.sys and put it where it needed to be.
However this time it now says "The files to not support your hardware"

So i'm assuming that the smwdm.sys file i downloaded was incorrect or something.

Right now there is no audio device in device manager.
I have HD audio set on auto in the bios rather than disabled.

    and thats about it really.

    Im stuck...

any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Also if this is a OEM pc like Dell or Hp you can find the drivers at their support website.

You may have an infection. Please post a HiJackThis log for review. To download Hijackthis:

go to here http://download.cnet.com/Trend-Micro-HijackThis/3000-8022_4-10227353.html and download 'Hijack This!' self installer. Save it to the desktop or other suitable place. DO NOT just press run from the website Double click on the file and it will install to C:\program files\hijackthis and create an entry in the start menu.
Click on the entry in start menu to run HijackThis
Click the "Scan" button, when the scan is finished the scan button will become "Save Log" click that and save the log.
Go to where you saved the log and click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" then Paste the log back here in a reply.
It will possibly show issues deserving our attention, but most of what it lists will be harmless or even required,
    so do NOT fix anything.

Download HijackThis http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/hijackthis/HijackThisInstaller.exe to your desktop
Double click on HJTSetup.exe on your Desktop
    Click Run and Install
It will install to Program files by default
    it will launch Hijack This
Click on "scan system and save a logfile" usually in notepad
Copy and Paste the logfile in your next post
Using Ctrl+A to copy All and Ctrl+C to copy and Ctrl+V to paste.

The program exits when the scan bar reaches the end.
Then when i try to run the program again, it says:
"windows cannot access the specified device, path or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item".

in other words, its like the exe becomes invalid after running it

thanks, i have tried what has been suggested on the site, to no success.

I try adding new hardware, and select "have disk"
and point to my striker II formula driver disk that came with the pc.
It has audio drivers on there, however when selecting the driver, it doesnt generate any model in the hardware list.

I've been searching online and what I've found is that even though it's not showing in device manager to go there and click uninstall and then restart the pc, if no joy put the audio disk and try installing. Doesn't make sense to me but some say it works.
