My son was installing a software program on his emachine C2684 that stated it ran better in 800 x 640 mode and he told it to run in that mode. The video then went blank. On reboot, we could see the splash screen, but nothing after that. After booting to safe mode and trying all the various options including go back:( to the last good configuration, still no video. We never could make it to the desktop with any of the options. After spending 50 minutes with gateway chat support, and plugging and unplugging peripherals, there is now no video at all, althought the system boots fine. The monitor light stays amber the whole time. I tried plugging my monitor into his system with the same results.

Any suggestions? The computer has a floppy so I could create boot discs from MS website it that would help.

The monitor is a Neovo LCD and the video card is a Radeon ATI Catalyst

You may have two vga ports on the back of the computer, and the other (!) one is the one that is working.

Also you should disperse all voltage (this is probably the problem)
Pull out the power cord (of the computer)
Hold in the power up button on your computer for 20 Seconds
    Let go of the button
Put the power cord back in securely

Also make sure the Monitor/Display cables are secure

    Turn on the computer

    WaLa (sorry I'm thinking ahead. ! )

Kimland, using your help we were able to get some video restored. It now has a video display until after the Windows splashscreen at which time it goes blank.

    mini WaLa

    Definately a Driver problem

First get the Video (on Startup ) back again ( if it's gone again )

Second start in safe mode (where the video drivers do not load (except Windows ones)

Ok, got to the desktop in safe mode. When I check the device manager everything looks ok, so how do I know what driver is the problem?

Should I just do a system restore from the help menu?

your responses are quick and I'm going in half an hour !!

Anyway, click on the display adaptor + sign (just quickly go through them)

And then right click on the display sub name and remove (or delete) Yes OK Apply

    Restart

    If that doesn't fix it.

Yes a system restore from Safe mode is a good idea (should have added that before)
