Computer is a compaq presario 5000 running windows ME
(horrid i know) ;)

Computer ended up getting 4 viruses (pws.hooker.trojan, bugbear, klez, magistr)

I followed the removal instruction for the viruses, and ran the removal tools in safe mode....

Restarted
Rechecked system appears clean. Looked at common places for the viruses, and win.ini settings, registry, etc, etc.

Installed Norton Antivirus 2003.

Installs just fine. Reboots. Loads into windows. Norton Icon in tray. However, no Registration Wizard.... hmm...

Restarted..... same thing...

Tried to start Norton program..... cursor changes to hour glass, then nothing....

Tried running live update. Downloaded and installed all updates for Norton. (with a reboot or two in process)

Still cannot get main program to open....

looked at the shortcut on the desktop top, points to a file (cfgwiz if i remember right) so i went to the norton directory. Ran the file. Nothing. I assumed this was for loading the Registration Wizard after install. So i tried running the normal program exe. Norton window pops up. hmmm...

Checked norton's site. Found a registry fix that walked me through removing a registry key for the registration wizard. Still no luck.

Uninstalled Norton, Live Update, Live Advisor, etc.
Removed Norton/Symantec Directories & Registry Keys.
Reboot.
Reinstall.
Reboot.

Same problem. I sent a message to the Norton Online tech support, but have not received a message back from them. I've seen this happen on 2 other machines that I know of and the other 2 machines weren't infected to begin with.

Ideas?
Thanks for your help.

After reading a few articles on norton, and some around the internet, I read that even though the removal tools had been ran and no infection was found, the computer would still do stuff like this....

So instead of chalking one up for format, I reinstalled windows over the top. Evidently this fixed the problem, because I then reinstalled norton again and this time had no problem.

I hate viruses....
