some history of this PC.
It was bought several years ago by myself and my brother for are Mom... My brother first played with it and truthfully he knew nothing about computers or the security of them.. I know of 3 computers he had and none lasted over a coouple months and he always it seemed had some computer expert over trying to fix it.. not trying to knock him just trying to give all info.. My mom also had never moved a mouse on a computer and I was not much of a teacher.. she did like all the free stuff ads... trouble there.. It seemed like it was always slow but it was on dial up and I was used to mine on cable so i put it up to that. difference. ..... Mom tierd of it after av year or so and put it all back in the box in 2005 or 2006..where it has been until a week or so ago..
I have downloaded all the updates and have it running SP3... that took several days..This PC is very slow even offline as well as online.. an example.. while trying to open the Tech Guys web site.. I went out and threw the ball for my dog.. three times.. then came back and it was just done loading... same with downloaduing hijackthis... several throws of the ball between each command prompt...
When I look back on it I think this computer was bad from new but because of the internet speed difference and our limited knowledge we did not see that.

I am hoping I am wrong and you can help me find a problem..
I will next put up a hijackthis log.. bare with me it may take a while..
Thanks

I'd start by adding more RAM. You got 256 in there, about the minimum that XP likes. RAM is sort of the money of the computer world; you have a problem, start by throwing ram at it and go from there.

You can go to crucial.com to find out exactly what type of ram you will need.

Ok thanks.. but in the mean time..My Gateway.. lasted many years working fine wit a 2.00 Ghz 256 Ram.... I would like to get a whole new PC.. but that isn't a option so trying to fix this... If you are saying a PC with 256RAM can't work I am going have to disagree with you.. I have proven that theroy wrong....I'm a older fella.. no games... not even any facebook twitter.. just enjoy a couple fantasy football sites.. and looking for an occassional bit of info on varing subjects..
I have over theyears got GREAT help here aTech Guys.. all with 256 Ram PC.. Mostly always gotthe problem fixed.. and NEVER.. did anybody say not fixable.. not enough ..whatever...
The world changes and as an older fella I know this more than some... maybe the people changes here at Tech Guys are now only able to help in the new bigger and better arenas.. Understandable to a degree but It may help folk like me and help on the wasting of you folks good time if you simply posted minimum requirements that are required for your expertise..
Thanks..

just stating the obvious, no need to get upset about it. :)

There are some things we can try; I call the below my 30k checkup for XP.

As for generally kludge cleaning, the 3 steps I do (in order):

1. Download and run ATF.

2. Defrag your hard drive

3. Download and run pagedefrag and use ntregopt to compress your registry; as it touches no keys, it's the only automated app I recommend to run on your registry.

reboot, and let us know how it's running.

thanks,

v

Sorry .. i'm a bit stressed and short fused over all this.. The obvious was not fixing anything.. I do appreciate your help..

concerning ATF.. I get....'this ID does not exist"

I don't know what for sure is causing it but at times things seem to run Ok.. as now.. then they pretty much shut down to slow ..very slow and stop... I ran a full scan with malwarebytes and it found 2 infected files.. out of 198,000... The CCleaner I ran early this morning seemed to help but then it slowed down again..

I will wait on your 2 and 3 until I hear from you on ATF

Twheelock:

I totally agree with valis about the RAM.

512 MB is the minimum amount that should be used with Windows XP.

And considering that programs and computer functions are getting more and more memory-hungry, 1024 MB or 2048 MB is even better.

As long as it continues to run with only 256 MB, it's going to have the performance of a turtle.

-------------------------------------------------------

Click Start - Run, then type in

%temp%

and then click OK.

Click Start - Run, then type in

c:\windows\temp

and then click OK.

Once those 2 temp folders appear and you can view their contents, select and delete EVERYTHING that's inside them.

If a few files resist being deleted, that's normal behavior. Leave them alone and delete EVERYTHING else.

After you're done, restart the computer.

-------------------------------------------------------

Start HiJackThis, but don't run a scan.

Click on the "Open The Misc Tools Section" button.

Click on the "Open Uninstall Manager" button.

Click on the "Save List" button.

Save the "uninstall_list.txt" file somewhere.

It'll then open in Notepad.

Return here to your thread, then copy-and-paste the entire file here.

I also agree that it would be better with 512.. 768.. in fact 4096 RAM would be just right.. with a duo core processer. 3.0 usb ports. etc etc.. but it don't andisn't going to... I realize things take more power etc than yesteryear.. But with the aforementioned 2.00...256.. pronounced dead.. computer I raced online for several years with Sierra Nascar..so.. It is workable..
And to Add.. what the out side world needs is not pertanet to this problem.. Lets try to leave the internet out of it for now.. AS mentioned in my starting post.. it is slow offline..I think it would be easier for us if we just mind set there.... I am pretty sure that this computer is going to get the dead tag to.. just trying to hold off a little longer

I'll be back with info..

If you don't have any software installed on the computer, the easiest approach would be to reinstall Windows.

According to your uninstall_list.txt log, that computer appears to be a Dell brand.

If it is, advise what the 7-character service tag number is.

Also advise what model name and model number it is.

--------------------------------------------------------

Unless you actually know how to use CCleaner safely, don't use it, especially its "Registry" feature.

Registry cleaner/booster/optimizer/tuneup programs will do little-to-nothing to speed up a computer, but what they can do is damage Windows and break programs.

--------------------------------------------------------

What kind of discs do you have for that computer?

There doesn't appear to be much installed in it, so there's not much to lose by doing a hard drive format and clean reinstall of Windows XP.

Since the fixtation here was on my small RAM..;) I took the problem to a couple other sites where surprising enough a couple folk started looking at other processes and items.. .. and thankfully it is WAY better.. there may still be a reinstall ahead but it actually is workable now.. So .. I will mark solved ..small Ram and all.. And While i thank Tech Guys as whole for past help.. I will not be back here and there are now better help places for me and to recommend to my friends,, You might want to think about this.. It is not always about the bigger..better...newer... It's about making work what you have to work with..The new era techs(?) here seem to not realize that..
