Have ongoing connection problems - ran a "network diagnostic" and this is the result. Have no idea what it means or how to fix it. Can someone please help. Thanks in advance.

I also have no idea if I have been hijacked, have trojans or what, but I listed a bunch of sites in my restricted zone, they disappeared, my fonts keep changing, strange things like that keep happening. No idea what's going on.
If someone can help, I would really appreciate it.

    Hi jsinbolton,
i don't think i have seen the diag tool you used, but before you get into that, have you updated your virus protection, run a virus scan? have you run a spyware program? (ie, spybot search and destroy) have you run an ad-ware program? (re, AdAware)
if you have, then can you be more specific as to what the problem is? what are some of the stats on your PC.

    Hi inetbogey
    Thank you for replying.
The diagnostic tool that I used was the option on the IE page. I was connected to the internet, but my IE7 home page (sympatico.msn.ca) would not load. Clicked on the option to run a diagnostic and the log posted was the result.
I have run AdAware, Spybot and NoAdware. They all came up with nothing major. Have AVG and didn't get anyting from it either, however, I also have Zone Alarm and XoftSpy and when I ran XoftSpy the other day, I got listings of trojans that it seemed to be picking up from my Hosts file (which I got from mvps). I just installed (on Saturday Feb 10) a wireless network connecting 2 desktops. This may have had some effect, but was having problems prior to that. Sent log to XoftSpy and they sent me the following instructions:

    Hello Jean,

I am attaching a few files that should help you with your issue.

First, start by saving the Zip files attached to this email onto your desktop.

Then double click the zip files to open them. You should get a window listing the files contained in the zip file. Unless you have installed something specially to do with zip files such as WinZip or WinRar this will look like a basic Explorer window. Click on Extract Files on the left hand menu and the Extraction wizard will open. Extract them to your desktop.

Run WinsockFix and make sure that nothing else is running at the time. Reboot immediately after it has finished.

Run Hoster.exe and click on the button that says 'Restore Microsoft's Original Hosts File'. Close the program and reboot your computer once it has completed.

(have not run anything yet - am running my AdAware etc. at the moment and will let you know if anything shows up.

My computer is a desktop running on XP Pro Version 2002 Service Pack 2, Intel Pentium 4 CPU 1.80 GHz 1.79 GhZ, 480 MB RAM

Am up and running at the moment, but I do think there is something wonky going on here. Will get back to you with results of my regular scans. Thanks for your help and patience.

Yes, from what you said i think the winsockfix, with the restore of the LM Host file will correct the problem. did you get the .zip file through e-mail?

    thanks.

    Hi again inetbogey
I got both zip files for both the winsock and hoster via email from XoftSpy tech support (this is their response to the log I sent them). I have unzipped them to my desktop and will run them. Hopefully that will fix things.
Thanks for your patience and help.

Of the top of my head i don't see anything. I will contact someone in security to have a look and see if they have come across this. Nothing should be affecting the WMI.

One thing I did notice in the beginning that it was referencing modem. Do you have a built in modem?

Couriant - I have a SpeedStream modem attached to my computer (received from my ISP) and listed in my hardware devices I have a PCI SoftV92 Data Fax Modem listed.

Cybertech - clicked on the link, picked the "run" option, located the "ResetProtocolDefaults.reg" in the registry, but no option to merge when I right click.

There is not a run option, you have open or save. It needs to be saved to the machine before you can merge it into the registry.
