I'm trying to use fontwork in openoffice - Writer

i can create the object and modify however, once it has been "accepted" in the document , I cannot find away to reselect the object again

I have hovered over the object where the mouse changes to an arrow - and then clicked - double clicked - moved the edge , right hand side etc and cannot select

anyone know how to select an object from fontwork once applied to document , so it can be edited again or just repositioned

You can select it by holding CTRL while you click on it.
You can select it by drawing a bandbox around it after clicking the select arrow.
You can also select it by clicking on it if another graphic object is already selected, including an image, a shape, or more fontwork.
