Why would I have seventeen instances of outlook.exe running when I don't have an Outlook window open?
This just started happening about the time I installed CA antivirus. When I open Outlook and then exit, the window closes but the process in Task Manager does not.

I don't use Choicemail but I tried the registry edit that was suggested.

Edit: I thought at first it was fixed (thanks for the help though) . If I opened Outlook and closed it before it actually connected to my ISP mail server, the outlook.exe processes closed. But if I leave Outlook open long enough to check the mail then close it, the outlook.exe processes do not terminate.

I checked that and it shows no COM add ins. I am almost certain this is a result of installing CA antivirus, but there nothing on their support website about it.

I also noticed "something" keeps editing my registry settings...

    if I set the value data for HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\mailto\shell\open\command = "C:\PROGRA~1\MICROS~2\OFFICE11\OUTLOOK.EXE" /recycle

as suggested by devil_himself, the problem goes away. (y)

A little while later the value gets changed back to "C:\PROGRA~1\MICROS~2\OFFICE11\OUTLOOK.EXE" -c IPM.Note /m "%1"

    and the problem returns.

I am going to try roadrunner.com email support (they gave me CA Anti-virus) and see if that turns up any leads too.

Note: I did the email support thing with Roadrunner.com but they were useless "our antivirus software can't cause your problem".

It could be related to one component of CA so please try this:

Go to Start – Run - type msconfig – click OK and click on the startup tab. Uncheck everything there except for your anti-virus program entry (CAVRID). Then reboot and let me know if the problem persists please.

Enable the XP firewall when doing the above as your CA firewall will not start.

I tried that too which did not work. After many hours of frustration with this problem I decided to uninstall all of CA Internet Security Suite. The problem is now gone (so much for roadrunner.com tech support telling me their software cannot cause the problem).

I will try AVG Free Antivirus next.

(please nobody send me a virus during the next hour or two).

I am now running AVG Antivirus. The problem (which according to roadrunner.com tech suppport cannot be caused by CA Antivirus) is solved.

Glad you got it worked out. Don't forget to get a third party firewall now. :)
