I need help. Someone installed SpyBot 1.4 on my advice. Now they can not access the internet. They said they received an error when they attempted their first scan and it locked up the PC. Now, if you go back and try the Recovery, you get a Registry recovery error.

They are connected to the internet via USB DSL modem/router. They are receiving a private IP address and Gateway from the modem and can ping the modem. However, nothing past the modem can be pinged.

Just to double-check, I had them connect via dial-up with the same results.

They are running W98SE.

Any suggestions?

Download and run the LSP Fix. Click the "I know what I'm doing" checkbox. (Don't do anything else)

Then click Finish.

http://cexx.org/lspfix.htm

See if that restores the Internet connection.

You're welcome. I suspect that was caused by an infection, probably NewDotNet, so it might be a good idea to post a HijackThis log for to be sure there is nothing else that needs attention.

Please do this. Click here to download HijackThis.

Close all open windows and open HijackThis. Click “Scan”. When the scan is finished, the scan button will change to “Save Log”. Click on “Save Log” and then save it to Notepad. Click on “Edit” – “Select all” – “copy” and then “paste” into the thread.

DO NOT FIX ANYTHING YET, most items that appear in the log are harmless or even needed.
