My pc is a pentium 4 2Ghz with 512mb ram and Windows XP. I've had it for about two years now and it seems like it's not performing as fast as it used to do. Startup isn't all the fast, like you'd expect from a P4. It'll get to the welcome screen on about an average speed and after it loads, the pc is kinda slow, like when you open my computer it loads for a couple of seconds. It'll take about 3 minutes after startup for the pc to function a little bit quickly. Maybe there's stuff on the startup list that doesn't need to be there? I'd appreciate your help.:) Oh and another question, is Norton AntiVirus Profession 2003 a good antivirus or I'm better off uninstalling it and using AVG Free instead? I'll paste a HJT log in case you need to see it.. Thanks in advance..

Well, in its day, Norton had been pretty highly regarded (nowadays, not so much). But your version is now four years out of date, so I would uninstall it. AVG is a pretty good antivirus, even for a free one.

The golden rule in computers is never run two anti-virus programs. Do a search on the best anti-virus software and see where yours rate. AVG is number ten on pc mag.

Thanks for the removal tool Bonk. I'm gonna uninstall Norton now.
Techkid: Yeah, AVG is running pretty well for me.:)

Do you guys have any suggestions for me in order to increase my PC Security after uninstalling Norton? Sort of a backup cause I don't feel too comfortable if my comp is just relying on AVG and the windows firewall to keep me safe. Thanks again for the help.

I just used the tool to remove Norton. everything went fine. I download zone alarm and installed it. It asked me to restart the pc. I restarted and it was fine. I left the pc on for a couple of minutes and when I went back I saw that it was rebooting again and scan disc is currently scanning. I let it finish then a blue screen flashes with messages but it doesn't even stay for a second, it dissapeared too quickly for me to read and it rebooted yet again. It performed another scan disc and the same thing happened. I tried booting into safe mode and then it was loading and it just stops. I waited for something to happen for about 10 minutes but still nothing happened so I pushed the reset button. I tried again and the same thing happened. I tried booting using the last known good configuration and it scanned the disc and the blue screen popped up again. I tried booting and canceled scan disc before it started and it just hangs. Please help...

    That is definitely unusual.

Hmmm. I don't know why that would happen, but it might be worth your while to back up your important data pretty quickly. Set this hard drive as a slave to another computer, and copy your important files to a CD.

I don't know what happened but when I woke up I attempted to boot up again. I selected the one to boot with the last known good settings it performed a scan disc and it loaded windows successfully. I looked at the event manager and nothing out of the ordinary there. I don't know what went wrong. I tried turning it off and on a couple of times and it starts up with no problem now. Really weird..I'm already backing up my important files..

just did a defrag about 3 days ago..Another thing, now that zone alarm has been installed, whenever I shutdown my computer, I have to click end now for vsmon.exe which I think is part of zone alarm. Is this normal? Is there a way to stop it because I have to wait for the end now button to appear then I have to click it before the pc finally shuts down.:)

If you are running a wireless router than you really dont need another firewall, the router has a firewall already running and you will notice a decrease in your internet speed from the second firewall running, I have been runnin just the router/modem firewall for the last year I have not hacked nor virus attacked or anything of that nature.

No. It is still still important to have a firewall running on your system. The router firewall is very good, but nevertheless the extra barrier helps.
