Does anyone know what this error message means, how I can prevent it from happening & why it is happening??

I get this message when I try to run some of the games or game demos I download from Pogo, Yahoo etc.

" Error: Access Violation at 0x6900d96F(tried to read from 0x417A998), program terminated "

What does it mean, someone has got to know. I need help so I can fix the problem

please don't double post. It can be confusing when some recommends something, then somebody else in ANOTHER post tries something without knowing what has been done.
