Hello, I've browsed the forum and found other people that have been in the same predicament as I'm in now. My computer has been infected with a NTRootKit-H Trojan, but following the help others received brought me to no avail. Some of my symptoms are: Strip Poker Popups, a strange homepage that searched for porno (I was able to rid myself of the home page), and my McAfee is going crazy and keeps giving my notifications that "A Trojan has been cleaned" and the file name is always in C:/WINDOWS/System32 and is usually named something like hdhdc.dll or hdcxt.dll. No matter what I do, I keep getting these notifications, along with others that say "McAfee has detected a virus on your computer, please scan your files." I've scanned my files many times and I always get one trojan per scan, and its always a NTRootKit-H. I've used: McAfee, Adaware, various other online scans, and Microsoft AntiSpyware Beta 1. (I'm using a Dell 8200 with Windows XP)

Hi Kalmahswamp

Welcome to TSG! :)

First you need to unzip (extract) Hijack This and move it to a permanent folder. It will not function properly when run from the zip folder or the Temp folder.

You need to create a new folder in My Documents and name it Hijack This. Right click on the HijackThis.zip file and choose "Extract all" and extract it to the Hijack This folder you created. That way it can create and restore backups if needed. HJT will store the backups in the same location that it is run from.

After you have done that, rescan with Hijack This and post a new log.

Restart to safe mode.

How to start your computer in safe mode

Because XP will not always show you hidden files and folders by default, Go to Start > Search and under "More advanced search options".
Make sure there is a check by "Search System Folders" and "Search hidden files and folders" and "Search system subfolders"

Next click on My Computer. Go to Tools > Folder Options. Click on the View tab and make sure that "Show hidden files and folders" is checked. Also uncheck "Hide protected operating system files" and "Hide extensions for known file types" . Now click "Apply to all folders"
Click "Apply" then "OK"

Now find and delete this file:

C:\WINDOWS\System32\cdral067.exe

Delete this folder:

C:\WINDOWS\System32\vmss

Also in safe mode navigate to the C:\Windows\Temp folder. Open the Temp folder and go to Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Go to Start > Run and type %temp% in the Run box. The Temp folder will open. Click Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Finally go to Control Panel > Internet Options. On the General tab under "Temporary Internet Files" Click "Delete Files". Put a check by "Delete Offline Content" and click OK. Click on the Programs tab then click the "Reset Web Settings" button. Click Apply then OK.

Empty the Recycle Bin

Boot back into Windows normally.

Download TDS-3 from http://tds.diamondcs.com.au/index.php?page=download

This is a Trial version so you will have to do the update manually.
The automatic update only works with the registered version which costs $49.

Update it following the instructions here:
http://tds.diamondcs.com.au/index.php?page=update

Under the "Manual Update" right click on the radius.td3 file and choose "Save target as".
Then in the "Save in" box browse to the C:\Program Files\TDS3 folder
(provided that is the location of your TDS-3 directory)and save it there.
A prompt will appear telling you that there is already a radius.td3 file there "do you want to overwrite it" click Yes.

Run the "full System scan" , preferably in safe mode.

Note: Temporarily disable your Antivirus program.
Launch TDS-3 and click on "System Testing" then "Full System Scan" and the scan will begin.

TDS-3 does not automatically remove infected files that it finds. It will display what it has found in the lower portion of the main window and it will either say "Positive Identification etc...." or "Suspicious File". Anything with a positive identification you should right click and delete. Don't do anything with the suspicious ones yet. Right click on any suspicious entry found and choose "Save as Text" then go to the TDS-3 folder (usually C:\Program Files\TDS) and look for a scandump.txt file. Open the scandump.txt file and copy and paste it's contents here. Once we see the scandump file we can determine what to do with the suspicious ones. Many times the suspicious files are harmless.

You're Welcome! :)

Now turn off System Restore:

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Restart your computer, turn System Restore back on and create a restore point.

To create a restore point:

Single-click Start and point to All Programs.
Mouse over Accessories, then System Tools, and select System Restore.
In the System Restore wizard, select the box next the text labeled "Create a restore point" and click the Next button.
Type a description for your new restore point. Something like "After trojan/spyware cleanup". Click Create and you're done.

Check this out for info on how to tighten your security settings and some good free tools to help prevent this from happening again.
