I hope i'm not doing wrong by posting here,,I have already posted under operating systems for vista,,and wasn't told enough to really help me out since i'm an idiot with pcs.

This is what little I know about my pc---
Windows Vista Home Premium
Service PK 1
Hewlett-Packard
Compaq PresarioF700 Notebook PC
Processor--AMD Athlon(tm)64 Dual Core Processor TK-57 190 GHz

About 2 months ago son-in-law downloaded a bunch of crap like divex, codec and other stuff i can't remember now what it was. It started slowing down pc more than usual so I went and deleted as much as I could remember that he had put on here,,then about 3 weeks later I started getting a popup called BLANK PAGE that would change the web site that i was on to something different. I would X out and pull up the web site i was on again. Then it it got to where it would pop up and change it 3 or 4 times before i could finally stay on web page i was trying to see. NOW along with changing my web page that i'm on it makes me lose connection (I Guess thats what it's doing) my PC stops responding d a window will come up that says Internet Explorer has stop Responding, do you want to stop, wait or close it out. I always have to close it out the other two options never work.
Also 2 days ago some times I have to go back and type my letters again because its like the PC stops responding for a split second and doesn't catch all my letters when I write.
I read the post that said to read this first before you post log file. I clicked on link for HJT and attempted to do this and have no clue if I did it right. I now have 2 HJT icons on my desk top. All the steps you said to take doesn't match up perfectly with the steps it tells you to take. So I hope it still is enough.
PLEASE HELP ME!!!

Hi there, you can get started by going to add/remove programs and remove Ares.

I'd guess your son in law also put that on, and it's a program used mainly for obtaining copyrighted materials (i.e. songs, movies) illegally.

Run HJT again, Right click and Run as Administrator, put a check in the following:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {02478D38-C3F9-4efb-9B51-7695ECA05670} - (no file)

Close all applications and browser windows before you click "fix checked".

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.

  • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
  • Under Main choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.

Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop. alternate download link 1 alternate download link 2
  • Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
  • Double-click on Download_mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
  • When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
  • MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan. If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue. If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
  • On the Scanner tab:
    • Make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected.
    • Then click on the Scan button.
  • If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
  • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
  • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
  • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
  • Back at the main Scanner screen, click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to restart your computer. (see Note below)
  • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply with a new hijackthis log.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

Run HJT again, Right click and Run as Administrator, put a check in the following:

O2 - BHO: NCO 2.0 IE BHO - {602ADB0E-4AFF-4217-8AA1-95DAC4DFA408} - (no file)
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [ares] "C:\Program Files\Ares\Ares.exe" -h

Close all applications and browser windows before you click "fix checked".

Now after you restart the machine delete the folder C:\Program Files\Ares

I followed your steps and after restart looked for a file named ares but cannot find one. I looked under control panel then under uninstall programs, then I clicked start button and I typed in ares in search box, and it said no match found.

I'm now having trouble recieving letters that have been scanned and sent to me as an attachment. When I open the attachment it looks like jibberish with all kinds of letters and symbols that doesn't even resemble what was sent to me. a small window pops up that says---
This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the Set Associations control Panel

I hope this last HJT scan will fix that.

I ran another HJT scan and this is the log file.

What is the file type of the attachment?

When you try to open, choose open with, then browse to Acrobat Reader, choose to always use that program for that file type.

Try save target as instead of downloading it, save to your desktop and try to open it that way.
