Can't imaging, that all of a sudden, since Diskeeper 9 recently came along, this MFT Defrag is now the solution for just about everything. Still haven't seen any before and after performance data to back this up. Only a help file from the manufacturer.

Maybe an analogy for the claim that adding space to the MFT when it was only 75% full made a big difference in performance, would be like saying you are getting better performance on your 120 gig drive because your 80 gig drive was 75% full. All that changed what how much unused space there was. And neither was anywhere near full. Still waiting to see why this would happen.

Again, not saying defragging isn't good. Just don't see how increasing the size when it isn't nearly full made such a huge difference.

Other than advertising descriptions, and since none has been provided, I've been trying to find some actual performance testing has been done regarding Diskeeper9

One site that actually had performance data:
http://www.sysopt.com/reviews/diskeeper/index2.html

"Benchmarks seem to show Diskeeper 9 offering a slightly better file system improvement compared to the XP defragmenter. The improvement comes at a cost of slower completion time. "

Mix of user opinions based on features and performance:
http://www.dslreports.com/forum/remark,11889368~mode=flat

If anyone else has done similar testing or found similar pages with actual results, it would be good to know.

Wow--I'll just stand back and let all you guys go at it--kind of like refereeing a hockey game in the NHL (if they ever come off strike!) :D

Anyway, here's the latest log. The 010 notations are gone, so I assume something good has happened there. The memory optimizer is part of a program called TuneUp Utilities 2004--an analysis and repair tool that according to the magazines, etc, is legitimate and pretty effective for those of us who can't quite handle our own analyses. I think I understand some of the to-ing and fro-ing on the optimizer, but can any or all of you suggest where I should go with Tuneup Utilities (which seems to work pretty well, otherwise?)

btw, I still haven't heard anything from the Diskeeper people and it still won't install. The furore this thread has evolved into is way over my head  , so when (if) you've all reached detente could you come back and let me know what the verdict is, in "layman's terms"

Thanks

If it makes you feel any better I had the same problem.

But the computer was newer so I just wiped it.

Thanks, Alan--it's more an irritant than a major issue, but one of those niggling little problems that you want to resolve. the rest of the guys on this thread are miles ahead of me--sooner or later one of them will crack it!

Warthog1,

Run HJT again and put a check in the following:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://minisearch.startnow.com/
R3 - URLSearchHook: HyperSearchHook - {B3A8959E-08CD-4A99-9711-8708A663C9B2} - C:\Program Files\Common Files\Hyperbar\HyperbarSS3.dll
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {03D1E4B7-EBEA-BD29-6C5D-DAC2AEBAF435} - C:\DOCUME~1\Steve\APPLIC~1\EQCDRO~1\PeakExit.exe
O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {BA52B914-B692-46c4-B683-905236F6F655} - (no file)
O16 - DPF: {14A3221B-1678-1982-A355-7263B1281987} - ms-its:mhtml:file://C:\foo.mht!http://82.179.166.130/e9xr2.chm::/file.exe

Close all applications and browser windows before you click "fix checked".

Restart in Safe Mode

Open Windows Explorer. Go to Tools, Folder Options and click on the View tab.
Make sure that "Show hidden files and folders" is checked.
Also uncheck "Hide protected operating system files".
Now click "Apply to all folders", Click "Apply" then "OK"

Delete this folder:
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Hyperbar

Delete this file:
C:\DOCUME~1\Steve\APPLIC~1\EQCDRO~1\PeakExit.exe **Note these folders are showing first 6 letters only.

Empty this folder: C:\DOCUME~1\Steve\local settings\temp

Reboot and post another log.

All done and new log attached--it didn't seem to like me "hiding protected operating system folders" and threatened me with problems starting, etc, but I completed it and so far, so good. One thing I couldn't find was the PeakExit.exe file. I've also tried a search, but it comes up empty.

Looks good! Any problems?

Turn off System Restore:

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Restart your computer, turn System Restore back on and create a restore point.

To create a restore point:

Single-click Start and point to All Programs.
Mouse over Accessories, then System Tools, and select System Restore.
In the System Restore wizard, select the box next the text labeled "Create a restore point" and click the Next button.
Type a description for your new restore point. Something like "After trojan/spyware cleanup". Click Create and you're done.

????

Steve

I would still unselect the option to run MemOptimizer. XP does not need any help in doing it's memory management.

cybertech: Thanks

Steve: Have you used the SpyBot options to lock IE settings?

Thanks, Cybertech--restore point created. Anything else I need to do at this stage? Will my Adaware, SpyBot & Spyware Blaster keep me reasonably "clean" in future?

WhitPhil--I'll cut off MemOptimiser. Are the other features in TuneUp doing me some good?

Thanks to both for the assistance.
