Trying to add a printer for a user and having no luck, I discovered that the spoolsv.exe is completely missing from this folder: C:\windows\system32\, where it should be. My question is, can I just copy the exe file from one XP machine to his? Doing a repair is not an option, because he is remote and we do not send out disks and Google isn't helping me with this question. TIA:)

There should be other copies on the machine itself. Do an Advanced Search and be sure to search hidden files/folders. There should be a copy in the dllcache as well as in the i386 folder and various other Windows update folders. Generally, the best one to copy over would be the one from the dllcache as some will be older versions. Just right-click the file and select "copy' then open up the System32 folder and right-click and select "paste" to drop a copy of the file in that location. Then reboot the machine. You may also have to restart the Print Spooler Service if it doesn't start on its own.

Since you're working on a computer and seem to be somewhat computer savvy, I've given general instructions. Let me know if you need more detailed instructions for any of these procedures. :)

Hi Cookiegal, guess you don't remember me. I went ahead and copied one from my machine anyway, and viola, problem solved. I do tech support for a living, but there are so many things that just only happen once in a blue moon!! Thanks for the help! :)

PS. I had done a search for other copies on the users' machine and there were none, which was odd. Just wasn't sure if I could use one from a different computer.

There really should be other copies. Perhaps the search critera wasn't wide enough (search system files, etc.).

If it's working, it shouldn't be a problem. Eventually, the file will be replaced with an updated version. :)
