I have installed an HP Printer to my laptop there are no cables it is via wireless and the problem I am having is that when I tried to print nothing happened, I then checked printers and faxes in the control panel and there was no printer installed, I then clicked to add a printer and I got the message "print spooler service not running". I then restarted the computer and went again to Control Panel printers and faxes and the printer was there but when I went to print a letter I got the message printer not installed, I then checked printers and faxes again and it had disappeared. I am pulling my hair out here does anyone have any advice.:D

What's the model name and model number of that HP printer?

Here is the support and software site for the HP Photosmart C6180.

The "Getting started" and "Solve a problem" sections are what you need to browse through.

You didn't mention what version of Windows is being used in your laptop.

I recall reading awhile back that these type printers needed to be set up to work with a wired connection first before they can be set up to work with a wireless connection with Windows XP. I don't know if this also applies with Windows Vista and Windows 7.

I think my laptop has a gremlin inside, I turned it on this morning and the printer promptly printed the document that I asked it to print yesterday, I also went into word and printed off a letter successfully so there does not seem to be a problem now.

I have another problem with the laptop being extremely slow, it was already slow but since installing the printer it is now even slower, it takes a good 15 minutes when I switch on to load everything and even then when I go to any of the programmes or internet I have to go away and leave for 5 minutes and then come back and with a bit of luck the window would be open, there is also delay of about 5min before the printer responds.

Can anyone give any suggestions as to if I can resolve this problem or do I need a new one.

If you try to use your laptop while something is printing, you'll notice a definite slow-down because the printing process is very resource-hungry.

The install of the HP software also installs extra unneeded HP crap if you allow it to do a full/complete install and not an optional/selective install. Look in the Add Or Remove Programs(XP) or Programs And Features(Vista) list, and you'll likely see several HP-related entries.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

What's the brand name, model name, and model number of your laptop? How much RAM does it have? What version of Windows is installed?

Do you know how to post a HijackThis log here?

My laptop is a Patriot 2432 Model No N34BS4 - Intel (R) - Celeron (R) CPU 1.70GHz - 1.69GHz. 240MB of Ram.

Windows XP Home edition.

And No to the other question.

Sorry for the delay in replying but I read your message at 5pm but I have been on and off since then trying to load Mozilla Firefox.

I think the laptop has a gremlin not only do I have the slowness problem but the sound keeps coming and going for no reason whatsoever.

My laptop is a Patriot 2432 Model No N34BS4 - Intel (R) - Celeron (R) CPU 1.70GHz - 1.69GHz. 240MB of Ram.

Windows XP Home edition.
The primary reason for the slowness in that laptop is the lack of RAM. Windows XP and its associated programs will run like a snail with only 256 MB.

That's the amount that laptop currently has. It's showing 240 MB because the other 16 MB is dedicated to the on-board display adapter.

You need to add at least another 256 MB, but preferably more if that laptop supports it.

---------------------------------------------------------------

Go here and click the green icon to download and save HijackThis 2.0.2.

Close all open browser windows first, then install it in its default location: C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis.

Start it and then click "Do a system scan and save a log file".

When the scan completes in 30 seconds or less, the log will appear in Notepad.

Return here and then copy-and-paste the entire log here.

I need to see what's currently installed in that computer.

I see evidence of at least 3 anti-virus programs - AVG, Avast, and Norton.

There's also too many programs that are auto-loading and running in the background.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

Start HijackThis, but don't run a scan.

Click on the "Open The Misc Tools Section" button.

Click on the "Open Uninstall Manager" button.

Click the "Save List" button.

Save the "uninstall_list.txt" file somewhere. It'll then open in Notepad.

Return here to your thread, then copy-and-paste the entire file here.

Alwil Avast 5 appears to be your anti-virus program.

Go here to download and save Norton Removal Tool 2010.0.5.18 and go here to download and save AVG Remover(32-bit).

Close all open windows first, then run the Norton removal tool and allow it to remove everything.

Restart your computer.

Run the AVG remover and allow it to remove everything.

Restart your computer again.

Start HijackThis and run a scan, then submit that new log here.

Considering the small amount of RAM in that computer, the startup load needs to be trimmed down as much as possible.

Some of the entries don't need to auto-load and run in the background at all, and other entries can be manually started when needed.

Take your time and do it correctly and in the order listed.

Click Start - Run, type in MSCONFIG and then click OK - Startup(tab).

Remove the checkmark from the entries that I've highlighted in bold type. Be aware that .exe may not be present in the name.

O4 - Global Startup: MicroNEXT Wireless Utility.lnk = C:\Program Files\MicroNEXT\Common\RaUI.exe

After you're done, click Apply - OK - Exit Without Restart. Don't restart your computer yet!

Click Windows Messenger in the Start menu to load its main window.

After it loads, click Tools - Options - Preferences(tab).

Remove the checkmark in the top 2 boxes, then click OK and close the program.

Click Start - Run, type in SERVICES.MSC and then click OK.

Expand the window so you can see the list clearly.

Double-click on the entries that I've highlighted in bold type. You have to do one entry at a time.

If the startup type is set on Automatic, change it to Manual, then click Apply - OK.

After you're done, close the window, then restart your computer.

When the small "System Configuration Utility" window appears during restart, ignore the message. Put a checkmark in that window, then click OK to close it.

Start HijackThis and run a scan.

Save that new log, then copy-and-paste it here.

--------------------------------------------------------------

If you're insistent on having Skype auto-load and run in the background every time you start your computer, then leave it checked. Otherwise, you can manually start it when you need it.

There were a couple of operations I could not complete as follows:

04-HKUS\S-1-5-18\..\Run:(CFTMON.EXE) User System
04-HKUS\S-1-5-18\..\Run: *ALUAlert*
04-HKUS\S-1-5-18\..\Run: (CFTMON.EXE) User Default user
None of these items were in the list.

In Services MSC Access was denied when I tried to change to manual on the following items:
O23 Service Avast Antivirus and 023 Pml Driver HPZ12.

Should I restart computer without changing these?
