Virtually everything I help other folks with I can find an answer to, but this one has me tearing my hair out.

Where I live in Spain we often get power cuts. Each time it happens I have to re-enter passwords for all the PC forums I help on and my Hotmail account, that was only a minor irritation, but now Hotmail has changed its security measures and made it a big irritation.

After the power has failed, PC is rebooted and when I try to sign into Hotmail I enter my email address and password and it takes me to a page that says "You haven't signed in from this location recently" that alone is hard to understand as I am using my hotmail account every single day.

It then asks for me to verify the account and sends me a text message, I enter the code number received and submit it only to be taken back to the same page again. I've done this verification several times and it just goes around in a never ending circle.

I end up having to select the option "I can't verify my account", fill in all the details and then later in the day or the next morning my account is accessible again, but only until there is another power cut and I have to go through the same routine all over again. I've tried to add my desktop PC as a trusted PC but it says I need to have Windows Essentials installed, so I installed it, rebooted and still got the same message.

On my laptop PC I don't get any of the above problems and can happily sign in and out of Hotmail, obviously that is not effected by power cuts, but there is no problem going in and out of the account.

Has anyone got any suggestions as to how I may be able to fix this or is there any way to contact Hotmail to get them to sort out the problem.

I was gonna suggest that you were getting a different public IP assigned by your ISP after the power cuts and that might explain the "You haven't signed in from this location recently" messages. But that should mean getting the same problem on your laptop.

I've taken the liberty of checking several of your posts and see that you are using different (at least three) different IP addresses. This could mean you are using proxies or it could mean that you are being assigned different IPs after power cuts.

I'm sorry, but except for these not very useful remarks I don't have any other ideas. :(

An interesting theory, thanks for that. Is there any way of stopping my ISP from changing my IP address, can it be made static? Internet issues are my weakest knowledge area .

I'm wondering if the laptop is not effected as I have not dared to sign it out of Hotmail completely, although it was only booted up after the last couple of power cuts to get at my email. Also, I have multiple boot on that machine with Vista, XP and Win7, Win7 is the only one that stays logged in to hotmail, the other two have the same issue as my desktop which is Win7.

As far as I know there is no proxy connection.

A static IP would cost more, and you may have to switch to a business (instead of residential) account, which would cost a lot more.

But the problem should not be happening. I log in to my Hotmail account (using web mail) and then sign out at least once a day, with different computers, and occasionally from a truly different location.

I suppose you have searched the Hotmail forum to see if others are having a similar problem? Maybe it has something to do with Cookies--saving them or not saving them or a corrupted one?

Only guessing here. What about your router settings? Does anything ever change after those power outages?

Having trouble logging into other secure sites?

Are the computer date and time ever affected?

Terry, If a Static IP is going to cost, I'm not interested and as you say this should not be happening. I shall look up the Hotmail forum and see if this is an isolated case, or not.

Thanks for the input Phantom, as far as I know nothing is changing on the router, we get power cuts nearly every day in the winter (not so frequent at the moment) and this only started to cause a problem since Hotmail have changed their security measures. As my laptop is still ok I doubt that anything on the router settings could be messing things up or the laptop would be affected as well.

All I loose is the saved 'log in' information when a power cut happens, I have had no issues signing back into any sites, PC forums and financial institutions are all fine, its just my Hotmail account.

PC date and time are correct.

I scanned with every tool I have at my disposal when this first happened and it all came up clean, the next day I was able to sign back into Hotmail with no problem, until the next power cut. This is going to be a severe pain in **** if it isn't resolved by the end of the summer, but I am sure I will find a way out of it.

The continuous repeating of the validation process tends to make me think this is an error with Hotmail, at their end.

The problem seems to have solved itself. I've made no changes to anything and yesterday we had three power cuts in the early evening, each time I rebooted the PC it signed me back into Hotmail without asking for a password so I can only guess that Hotmail have updated something in there new security setup. Fingers crossed it stays like that.

I shall now mark this as Solved, thanks for your replies.
