Hey any one got any ideas, when i start up my pc and try to open up my web browser weather its firefox or internet explorer it taking about 5 minutes or so but then when its open it works grand.

I've defraged the registery
defraged the hd
got rid of anything on my startup that does not need to be there
ran all updates with ms and antivirus software

O also this pc is nearly 5 years old with only 512 or ram, Pentium 4 so not to modern by any standards but still enough power to run web browsers and some speed.

any help would be great

thanks leon

There can be quite a few causes for this behavior. You may still have too many unnecessary running processes in the background for the amount of RAM you have. You may also have some sort of infection not detected by your security software...

Please download and install HijackThis.

Run it and select Do a system scan and save a logfile.

The log will be saved in Notepad. Copy and paste the log in your next post.

Do not fix anything.

I would remove anything related to the Ask toolbar.

Also, you might have a little too many running processes for your 512 Mb of RAM.

If Logitech Desktop Messenger is still installed in your computer, uninstall it, then go into the C:\Program Files\Logitech folder and delete the entire Desktop Messenger folder.

----------------------------------------------------------------

If you've previously had PC Tools Spyware Doctor installed and have gotten rid of it, make sure its folder is deleted from the C:\Program Files folder.

---------------------------------------------------------------

Run a scan with HijackThis, place a checkmark in:

O2 - BHO: AskBar BHO - {201f27d4-3704-41d6-89c1-aa35e39143ed} - C:\Program Files\AskBarDis\bar\bin\askBar.dll

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {5C8B2A36-3DB1-42A4-A3CB-D426709BBFEB} - (no file)

O3 - Toolbar: Ask Toolbar - {3041d03e-fd4b-44e0-b742-2d9b88305f98} - C:\Program Files\AskBarDis\bar\bin\askBar.dll

O18 - Protocol: bwfile-8876480 - {9462A756-7B47-47BC-8C80-C34B9B80B32B} - C:\Program Files\Logitech\Desktop Messenger\8876480\Program\GAPlugProtocol-8876480.dll

then click "Fix Checked".

-------------------------------------------------------------------

After the above has been done and your computer restarted, post a new HijackThis log here.

-------------------------------------------------------------------

Restart your computer, open these 2 Temp folders:

C:\WINDOWS\Temp

C:\Documents And Settings\(Username)\Local Settings\Temp

and then delete everything from inside those Temp folders.

If a few files resist getting deleted, leave them there and delete everything else.

Empty the Recycle Bin and then restart your computer.

Advise how it went.

Leon:

Yes, a large buildup of temp files can impede overall performance. Temp folders are also a good location for malware, spyware, viruses, etc. to hide. You should clean them out a couple of times a month.
