I have Dell Inspiron14z Ultrabook running windows8 which came preinstalled.

I do not know if this is a hardware or software problem. Sometimes, the internet connection disappears.

Most of these times, when I rt. click on the network icon, and then click on 'troubleshoot', windows reestablishes the connection. A message appears: 'Resetting the Ethernet modem. A network cable is loose or broken'. There is no cable connection between the computer and the router. Does is mean a cable inside the computer is lose?
However once, the wifi signal was not restored, but restarting the computer solved the problem.

I shall be grateful for any help in this matter.

    Thanks,
    Preet

Make sure you have the latest wireless driver from Dell's web site.

What firewall or security suite is, or ever was, on the system?

Please attach a screen shot of the Networks page (don't collapse the Radar, Connection or Signal History) of the Xirrus Wi-Fi Inspector. If you need help with that see TSG Posting a Screenshot. FWIW to take screen shots with Windows 8 or 7 or Vista I prefer to use the built-in Snipping Tool.

    Also show ...

Open a (black) Command Prompt window:
Hold the Windows logo key and press r; in the Run box type cmd and click on OK.

    Type the following command:

    IPCONFIG /ALL

[Note that there is no space between the slash and ALL.]

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

If necessary use a text file and removable media to copy the results to a computer with internet access.

That will happen if you run ipconfig /all in the Run box. Follow the above instructions to run ipconfig /all in a Command Prompt window.

    Terrynet,

The antivirus is AVG, and the firewall is windows firewall.

Wifi had disappeared again. Windows asked to reset the router, Wifi came back after resetting the router, so this time it was the router.
Previously, windows had never asked for router reset, and after the problem was fixed, the message was:

    Problems found
A network cable is not plugged in or may be broken Detected
Problem with wireless adapter or access point Fixed

    Thanks,
    Preet
