I have a Dell Inspiron 1200 laptop running Windows XP SP3. When I close Windows Explorer, I get a popup warning stating "Proxy Desktop: explorer.exe - Application error, referenced instruction 0x01e8422a..." to which I hit close.

I looked at one of the common solutions 'uncheck Tools > Folder Options > View > Launch folder windows in a separate process', but that choice was not used/checked. I also inspected my Startup Programs and have no unusual programs starting or running from there.

I have rerun a Registry Cleaner and all appropriate virus, ad-mal-spyware programs finding nothing.

Is there a registry key entry that I can check? I have spent several hours checking Google links without success. Could it be a corrupted profile?

Please click HERE to download and install HijackThis.

Run it and select Do a system scan and save a logfile from the Main Menu.

The log will be saved in Notepad. Copy and paste the log in your next post.

    IMPORTANT: Do not fix anything

Yes, I was updating this client's laptop, so I have installed several items prior to this showing up.

Maybe you can try a Clean Boot procedure to isolate a possible culprit. Read pages 1 and 2 from link.

If no luck, a System Restore?

I thank you for your input, but this is not the kind of problem that can be fixed by the simple routine gestures that any computer repairman is aware of. MSCONFIG is not going to solve the problem, nor do I want to go backwards using SYSTEM RESTORE. I consulted with the users of this forum to find a solution, a fix, an antidote to this minor inconvenience. I should not have to undo all my work on this laptop to fix a simple popup box annoyance.

I had this same problem 2 years ago working on a PC and I stumbled upon the solution to uncheck a setting and that worked. That is not the case this time.

If it was that easy, I would have already solved the problem. Please, if you do not know the solution, then just say so. I haven't got eons of time to repeat the class PC Repair 101 - I'd prefer some solution that I haven't already done or considered. Thank you.

Actually, no, I don't know the solution and I don't see anybody else coming up with one here or anywhere else on Google. I'm providing some troubleshooting steps to hopefully find some clues that could lead us to a solution.

    Wishing you good luck.

Something puzzling me though. Did you recently uninstall a SNMP application? Remnants of the application may still be using Windows Explorer and not releasing it...

Your HijackThis log is showing invalid entries in the Services list:

O23 - Service: SNMP Service (SNMP) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\System32\snmp.exe (file missing)

O23 - Service: SNMP Trap Service (SNMPTRAP) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\System32\snmptrap.exe (file missing)

Click Start > Run > type CMD

In the command prompt window, type:

    sc delete SNMP

    Press Enter.

    sc delete SNMPTRAP

    Press Enter.

    ==================================================================

Your log is showing two running explorer.exe processes, one of them probably related to the error. What if you kill the second one?

    Thank you.

I killed the SNMP and SNMPTRAP, rebooted and tested with the same results - so I am going to walk backwards with RESTORES until the problem disappears. I will analyze the results and narrow the culprit (I hope)...

OK - what HKEY entries are tied to Windows Explorer? It must be an HKEY line that is invoking this application call...
