This is something from the paranoid corner of my brain, a question that's bugged me for a long time:

If I'm linking to the 'Net via Ethernet cable rather than wireless and I have my Bluetooth switch on the laptop off, is it possible for someone to use malware to turn my laptop's wireless connection on without my knowing it?

The reason I ask is because I saw something called Switcher.exe com up on the Task Manager while I was busy being paranoid about something else, and wondered what that could possibly be doing when I have the Bluetooth switch off and don't even have the Ethernet hooked up yet (I'd just booted up.)

    'Just a random, burning question...

    is this a Sony computer?

I haven't heard of any current malware that can turn on wireless when it it physically turned off

Yes, it's an old FZ290. I've always been leery of wireless connectivity of any kind, out of that concern. Marking as "solved" because this was a question rather than an actual problem. Thank you for your reply.
