What attribute in about:config wrt Firefox controls whether an image say from a news oriented webpage will display or not? Typically, to see the image I have to right-click View Image to see the image which downloads in a fresh display, otherwise, what usually displays is a white-box with an icon for the undisplayed image in the upper left-hand corner of the white-box where the image should normally display.

Look for permissions.default.image and set the value to 1.
This should be the default and allow all images to load, regardless of origin.
