Solved: Question about HelpSvc.exe

    Not sure if this is the right forum to post this, if its not, feel free to move me .. LOL ..

    My computer runs great, most of the time .. but sometimes, it starts to take a lonnnnng time between pages, and when I bring up the Task Manager, there's a process called 'HelpSvc.exe' that's using LOTS of CPU, and the CPU is always at 100% .. I always reboot, and it doesn't come back on. Not right then anyway. And this doesn't happen everyday. Maybe once a week or so. I'm pretty sure I'm virus free, I have all the tools (SpyBot S&D, AdAware, Ewido ((free)) etc), and run scans every other day. Never come up with anything more then a tracking cookie. Just wanted to get some thoughts on this HelpSvc.exe. I searched here at TSG, but came up blank. If you need a HJT log, I'll post one, just let me know. Thanks in advance!

Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, Microsoft recommends that you wait for the next Windows XP service pack that contains this hotfix.)

    Should I just wait then? I mean, this doesn't happen every day, and I wouldn't say that I'm 'severely affected by this problem'.

    You could just set Help and Support to manual or disable.
    Start> Run> type: services.msc then OK.
    Scroll down to Help and Support and double click it.
    In the Startup type: on the dropdown, select manual or disable. If set to manual, on the Service status: select the Stop button. Then Apply and OK.

    I would like to report that the runaway process problem of helpsvc.exe has re-appeared after I installed Service Pack 3 of XP-Pro.
    This was the first time I noticed the problem.

    I read the Microsoft article:

    This article says the problem should be solved with SP2.

    I even contacted the 'chat' on Microsoft support.
    WHAT A COMPLETE WASTE!!!

    The agent did not even appear to acknowledge that the problem reappeared with SP3.
    I was very polite and he closed the session while I was typing.
    His advice was to contact my OEM since they had the resources to fix the problem.

    Makes **no** sense to me.

    My advice if this happens to you:
    Go to component services and change helpsvc properties from auto to manual.
    Send an e-mail to Microsoft.
    Try to relax. :)
