Problem: My pc freezes randomly on almost anything in such an extend that i have to use the reset button to boot up again
sometimes only once and somtimes 2-12 times a session (one evening) its driving me out of my mind !!
It always hangs on defragmentation or virusscans (norton)...
As far as i can remember this started after an update from windows...but when i want to remove sp1 i get a message that most of my programs might not function anymore

Things i have done: Bios flash, downloaded new drivers for my video, memtest (no result on basic testing),downloaded a special scanprogram of my hd manufact and resolved one error, downloaded spybot s&d and removed spyware, downloaded adaware 6 and removed everything i found out of the ordinary , ran hijackthis and removed everything out of the ordinary, ran norton system utils and repaired registery, replaced my cooling system/fan,cleaned out my casing (lot of dust there)...checked is my memory/cards/cables where seated proparly, put in an extra fan in my casing...... ia am going crazy!! nothing has helped :-(

ps also checked my temp of cpu = between 30 and 38 C

Q : what else can i do to find out what the problem is ??

Hey, I had a similar prob with my old comp... so I bought a new one  lol

Have you tried a complete format? How old is your computer, mainly the processor, RAM, and video card? Have you run benchmarks on your hardware lately to test for stability?

I have the same problem with mine it locks up just setting there, does it once or twice a day. My xp system restore never did work so i install gobackl, that way when i update from windows i do them one at a time so if they cause ant lockups i just revert my drive to the day before to get rid of them. Other than that i never could figure out why mine locks up everyday, been doing it for almost 6 months now.

My computer is about 3 years old and i have run som benchmark/burn in tests .....and its the same as any other program sometimes it hangs somtimes its fine
and as for the complete format , i haven't done that yet...i see it as a last resort and if my system functions after that i still would'n know what was wrong with it lol anyways some other things i have tryed in the mean time.......defragmentation succeeded in windows safe mode and als my virusscan did (no problems there)

but as soon as i boot up the normal way ......the problem still remains :-((

I read in another thread that if there are no problems in windows safe mode ..the problem must be software related rather than hardware rel ??

Run Hijack This again and put a check by these. Close all browser windows and "Fix checked"

Reboot to safe mode and delete:

    The C:\WINDOWS\Web\oslogo.bmp file.

    Boot back to normal.
Click on the link below and it will download CWShredder. Close all browser windows. UnZip it and click on the cwshredder.exe and let it do it's thing.

    http://www.spychecker.com/download/download_cwshredder.html

When it is finished restart your computer.

These are the only things I see. I'm not so sure that the symptoms that you describe are not hardware related. Do the above suggestions and then post back and let us know how it's going.

As I said before I suspect you have a hardware problem ie... Bad RAM or overheating.
As you said your CPU temp was around 38C the first place to start would be with the RAM.

Since you have two sticks of RAM try removing one and run the machine with just the one. If the problem persists switch them.

    Keep us posted

Be sure to keep yourself grouned by placing one hand on the metal part of your case to discharge any static while removing the RAM stick.
