I had some problems recently and with the help of one of the TSG locals, I located and got rid of a malicious file.
However, I had a problem at that time that I could not resolve, and am still trying to beat it down. Now I am beginning to get random errors I can only run Spybot S & D in safe mode. Progress bar for it will show it at about 39.../56120. Then the system reboots itself, sometimes twice...and sometimes there comes the message that my computer has recoverd from a serious problem  I have a similar problem with running PandaScan, it just won't make it all the way thru.
I know I have tons of stuff running in the background and would like to cut out as many of those as I can, I've just not gotten that far yet.
I'm posting my HJT log in hopes someone can help spot my culprit.
Thanks in advance for the help.

There definitely are too many unnecessary programs running in the background. Make use of this site and get the startup list trimmed down.

Yes, it's my plan to get there sometime today and go thru the list completely. I am bothered tho by the random shut downs and reboots at the computers will and why I am unable to run Spybot or Pandascan

OK, I ran over and went thru the list and have disbaled those that I found were definately not needed. However, since it's an HP machine, it seems there are several that aren't listed and I don't know enuff to guess at whether they are needed or not. I've tried multiple times to disable the HP Instant Help and software update that pops up on starting, but it seems impossible. If you see something in the startup list that I have missed, please point it out!
I'm pasting a new HJT log in hopes someone will spot what is stopping me from running Spybot and Pandascan. I'm terrible at doing back ups, but do have one from when the machine was fairly new. I always seem to lose stuff and have to do new updates etc, but that was on my old 98 system. I've not had to facereformatting with XP yet.

You could try disabling the Tea-Timer on Spy-bot and Ad-Watch on Ad-aware they might be interferring running Spybot and Pandascan

    Spybot S&D (Teatimer)

    • Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode.
    • If it is not already set to do this Go to the Mode menu select "Advanced Mode"
    • On the left hand side, Click on Tools
    • Then click on the Resident Icon in the List
    • Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts.
    • Restart your computer.

    Ad-Aware Ad-Watch

    • Right click on the Ad-Watch icon in the system tray.
    • At the bottom of the screen there will be two checkable items called "Active" and "Automatic".
    • Active: This will turn Ad-Watch On\Off without closing it
    • Automatic: Suspicious activity will be blocked automatically
    • Uncheck both of those boxes.

These three processes are not needed on startup.

    hpsysdrv.exe = Hewlett-Packard Monitoring Tool
HPWuSchd.exe = Hewlett Packard Software Update Scheduler
pchbutton.exe = Hewlett-Packard Instant Support Software <---this is the one that pops up.

Go Start>>Run type msconfig click OK
Then click on the Startup tab
And look down the list and uncheck them

When you restart you will get a message about selective startup click in the don't show me again box then click OK.

Well, I got further with S&D this time, but got an error part way thru that read
"Error during check. TurboDownload[2] Access violation of address 00000008. Read of address 00000008" At that point it locked up and quit responding, but did not reboot as was doing before. I don't understand there being anything about a turbo download since I do not use any program to accelerate downloads. Is this perhaps what is causing all my trouble?
I have tried multiple times to remove these buttons and pop ups thru disabling at start up with msconfig, including when I went thru the list and just now. They are still there, pesky little varmints.

Spybot's TeaTimer and Ad-Aware's Ad-Watch don't need to be running in the background.

You can also disable most, if not all, of those HP entries.

The HotKeysCmds and Sonic Update Manager entries can also be disabled.

Ok, all of that is dealt with. The dang software update and HP help button are however, stubborn and refuse to be shut off.
My real issue remains....running S&D and Pandascan.

Disable Windows Defender from running in the background, reboot, then see if you can run Spybot.

    I know nothing about Panda.

I've tried that. I've shut everything down. The only way is in safe mode. I'll give it another shot tho, maybe I missed something the first time. I know I'm gonna be bald before this is over. :)

Nope, turning of Defender does not allow you to run spybot or active scan. Still shutting down & rebooting about 3/4 of the way thru.
Any heavy hitters wanna try at why this is happening?

Spybot doesn't play nice since a MS security update a few months ago. I started having problems with TeaTimer going unresponsive on logoff, so I started looking for it. Using Task Manager, I discovered that it was frequently going unresponsive not long after startup.

I had random system stalls and hangs, and whenever I would reboot to clear it, the "End Program..." dialog box would pop up with TeaTimer listed as unresponsive. I did the uninstall/cleanup/reinstall routine a couple of times, but to no avail.

I uninstalled Spybot Search & Destroy and cleaned it out of the registry, and the random hangs and stalls have not returned.

I'm using AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 now, along with Windows Defender, and I run them concurrently without problems. I had used Spybot for years without incident, but I couldn't find a cure for it; the website didn't list the problem/issue. I had similar symptoms with my laptop, and uninstalled it there, also. No problems on the laptop anymore, either.

I've wondered if the MS updates and programs were affecting the two programs running. I'd still like to be able to use both of these. I don't like being dependant on just MS.
I just ran AVG's spyware tool and got the message that my $Mft file is corrupt, so I guess I'm gonna try to fix that, see if it doesn't help with this issue, since S&D is constantly hanging at boot.
