I bought a laptop from a friend and it has no sound. When I tried to find the source of the problem an error message pops up which I am sure is the root of my problem. It is Realtek AC97 audio driver error code 10. Make: emachines xp, Model number: m622-uk8x. Can someone please assist me with this issue, I would really appreciate it. Thanks in advance.

Go to "Add & Remove Programs" in the "Control Panel" and uninstall the current Realtek Audio drivers and reboot as needed. Once rebooted it should pick up the card and try to install a driver, just click Next and then Finish/Close at the end regardless if it finds a driver or not.

Now download and install the latest Realteck AC97 drivers from here: http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads...=23&Level=4&Conn=3&DownTypeID=3&GetDown=false
- The Executable file is easier and it will run through the setup automatically without the need to extract the drivers first.

That was not successful. It stills that there is a problem and it said something about locating windows.hpi I believe it said. The window closed quickly but I believe that is what it said. Thanks

When I go into device manager there is now a exclamation mark next to multimedia audio controller and it will not allow me to update the driver.

Make: emachines xp, Model number: m622-uk8x.
The eMachines M622-UK8X, also referred to as the eMachines W4620, is a budget laptop made by eMachines, which was purchased by Gateway in 2005.

eMachines W4620 support and drivers

If that laptop still contains all the "debris" and problems from its previous owner, you need to do a clean reinstall of Windows XP SP3 and get a fresh start with it.

There is not much of anything on the laptop, he deleted almost everything on it before I got it from him but it did not have any sound when I got it from him. By me wiping it clean that should help me to gain sound to laptop?

Right-click My Computer, then click Properties - Hardware - Device Manager.

Are there any entries in the list that have a yellow ? or yellow ! or red X next to them?

-----------------------------------------------------------------

Click the + in Sound Video And Game Controllers.

What's listed in that heading?

That computer has no sound because the driver isn't installed for the audio device.

Double-click the Multimedia Audio Controller entry to open its properties window.

Click the Details tab, then select Hardware Ids.

There will be one or more strings that have VEN_####&DEV_#### as part of it.

Advise what the 4 numbers and letters are that follow VEN_ and DEV_.

Be careful not to make any typos.

-------------------------------------------------------------

The audio device may be Conexant AC'97 Audio, but we need to confirm that.

If that audio driver doesn't work, go here to download and save the Conexant audio driver.

It's in .zip format, so you'll need to download and save it inside a new folder that you create on the desktop.

Extract its contents inside that folder.

Double-click the "setup.exe" file to start the install process.

I was able to download it and there is no longer a yellow ! next to the multimedia audio controller but there is also still no sound. I went into the control panel, sounds and audio devices, and volume. It says no audio device and I do not have the option to click on anything at all, nothing is highlighted under volume.
