I have or had Windows 98 SE, I was going to reformat my hard drive and started this process. Screen came up and told me that Hard Drive had to be compressed first. So I started the compressing process. PC scanned for errors and found errors that had to be repaired first. So I scanned disk and repaired errors. Went back into the compressing process and got the same message, that errors were found and had to be repaired. Every time I scanned for errors, it said there were none. So a friend was going to reformat hard drive from floppy start up disk. He used one that I had made before. But reformat was done. Now I cannot reinstall Windows. Put in my Windows 98 disc with floppy and tried to re-install. Kept gettting message saying bad name. So now I have nothing. Any suggestions??? :(

Boot the computer with the Startup (Boot) Diskette. At the Menu select Command Prompt with CD Support. A letter will be assigned to the CDROM. Most of the time is E:. Insert the Installation CD. At the prompt the the following and press Enter:

E:\Win98\Setup

Where E: is the drive letter assigned to the CD_ROM. Let me know how it goes.

Hi punkybunge

Welcome to TSG! :)

I got your pm. It is as follows:

:) Hello, I really need to ask you a couple of questions. First is, can you reformat a hard drive without a floppy start up? I have the Windows XP CD Rom, but no floppy and my a drive doesn't work for some reason. Even though it says it does. I don't want to even attempt to start, if I can't do it all with the installation disc. I'll wait for a response before I do anything.

Thank you,
Punkybunge
I don't know if I am assuming correctly that this is the same problem here, but for now that is my assumption.

You are saying in this thread you are trying to reformat and reinstall Windows 98, but in the pm you say you're installing XP. Again I'll make an assumption and assume that you have decided to upgrade to XP instead. That being the case, the answer to your question in the PM is, yes you can boot from the XP disk and reformat and install XP from the disk. You do not need a boot floppy to reformat and install XP. First you will have to make sure that the BIOS is configured to boot from the CD Rom drive first.

Here is the best guide that I know of for reformating and installing XP complete with illustrations:
