Solved: Regedit, TaskManager and msconfig will not stay open

My Taskmanager, msconfig and regedit will not remain open. I realize this is due to a virus or spyware, but i still haven't been able to fix this problem. I had to recently restore my entire computer so i've held back on reinstalling many things. I am also unable to install any windows updates due to an error (without them, im pretty sure im more prone to getting more spyware and viruses). If anybody could help me out, i would extremely appreciate it!! :)

#2 ·
Have you run the basic spyware scanners such as SpywareBlast, Adaware and Spybot? If not the links to download are all below. Also, try downloading Ewido (link below) and running a scan and deleting whatever it finds. Then download and run HijackThis (link also below) and post a log here for additional help with other possible background programs. Hope this helps.

#5 ·
also what r u using to browse the internet (Firefox, Internet Explorer or another?)

#10 ·
is the icon for HJT (HijackThis) a zipped folder or something else? and did ewido work?

#12 ·
i went into safe mode and ran hijackthis, and it worked!! so, here's the log:

I'm going to try and delete the files that the scan did not disinfect on my own. Hopefully there will be no problems with that. And by the way, my regedit, msconfig and task manager all work now after the removal of those 3 viruses Thank you so much!!

#16 ·
If that really got rid of it, then there is no reason to use Killbox but just to make sure why don't you rune HJT again and post the new log.

#18 ·
The files that I removed on my own were all the ones in the Cookies folder, and in the Temporary Internet Files folder.

Here's the new HJT log:

Download KillBox here: http://www.downloads.subratam.org/KillBox.exe
Save it to your desktop.
DO NOT run it yet.

Click Start – Run - and type in:

services.msc

Click OK.

In the services window find: SpywareCleanerService

Right click and choose Properties. On the General tab under Service Status click the Stop button to stop the service. Beside Startup Type in the dropdown menu select Disabled. Click Apply then OK. Exit the Services utility.

Note: You may get an error here when trying to access the properties of the service. If you do get an error, just select the service and look there in the top left of the main service window and click "Stop" to stop the service. If that gives an error or it is already stopped, just skip this step and proceed with the rest.

Rescan with Hijack This.
Close all browser windows except Hijack This.
Put a check mark beside these entries and click "Fix Checked".

Boot into Safe Mode.

* Double-click on Killbox.exe to run it.

Put a tick by Standard File Kill.
In the "Full Path of File to Delete" box, copy and paste each of the following lines one at a time:

C:\WINDOWS\System32\irc.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\av32.pif
C:\WINDOWS\System32\winxpfwl.exe
C:\dr.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\CMD.COM
C:\WINDOWS\system32\netstat.com
C:\WINDOWS\system32\ping.com
C:\WINDOWS\system32\regedit.com
C:\WINDOWS\system32\tasklist.com
C:\WINDOWS\system32\taskkill.com
C:\WINDOWS\system32\tracert.com

Click on the button that has the red circle with the X in the middle after you enter each file.
It will ask for confirmation to delete the file.
Click Yes.
Continue with that procedure until you have pasted all of these in the "Paste Full Path of File to Delete" box.
Killbox may tell you that one or more files do not exist.
If that happens, just continue on with all the files. Be sure you don't miss any.
Next in Killbox go to Tools > Delete Temp Files
In the window that pops up, put a check by ALL the options there except these three:
XP Prefetch
Recent
History
Now click the Delete Selected Temp Files button.
Exit the Killbox.

Find and delete these folders:

C:\Program Files\Spyware Cleaner
C:\WINDOWS\system32\i
C:\WINDOWS\system32\o

Finally go to Control Panel > Internet Options.
On the General tab under "Temporary Internet Files" Click "Delete Files".
Put a check by "Delete Offline Content" and click OK.
Click on the Programs tab then click the "Reset Web Settings" button.
Click Apply then OK.

Empty the Recycle Bin.

Reboot, post a new log.

You're welcome :)

Now turn off System Restore:

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Restart your computer, turn System Restore back on and create a restore point.

To create a restore point:

Single-click Start and point to All Programs.
Mouse over Accessories, then System Tools, and select System Restore.
In the System Restore wizard, select the box next the text labeled "Create a restore point" and click the Next button.
Type a description for your new restore point. Something like "After trojan/spyware cleanup". Click Create and you're done.

You can mark your thread "Solved" from the Thread Tools drop down menu.
