Solved: Remote Hosting

    A friend of mine in the States has found himself an excellent unlimited hosting deal with a US-based company and I was wondering if, even though most of my client's are based in Southern Africa and Europe, would there be any disadvantages in my also using hosting in a different country?

    Some considerations:

    Time zone differences for support if something goes wrong with your hosted server. This may not be a problem if you have a mission critical SLA in place for 24/7 support.

    Latency. The further away your hosted server is from your clients or users, the greater the probability of physical distance performance issues affecting your client and user experience.

    Thank you zx10guy - after due consideration I think I can accept the latency factor and these guys advertise excellent up-time, so I'm not worried there either. Does anyone know if it may affect Google rankings adversely?

    where you host does not generally affect SEO rankings ( apart form the rogue hosters)

    Most US hosting companies do have 24/7 support and it is very usual for them to have customers from all round the world

    The other big drawback can be the exchange rate
    You will obviously be paying in USD. The exchange rate between USD & other currencies can fluctuate widely, especially with a weaker currency like SA rand. Just watch out that it doesn't prove too expensive in long run.

    It's these chaps Derek - they charge $39 p.a. unlimited databases - which I'm particularly interested in ...

    Having 24/7 support available is different from contracting or paying for 24/7 support. Make sure what ever service you purchase, you set up the appropriate level of support. Many services like this do not just give away 24/7 support. It's costly and as such companies charge a premiums for this. Also, many 24/7 support services are broken down to how fast the company will act on your logged trouble ticket. Again, there may be someone there to answer your call for support but whether there will be a tech to act on it is another story. For Enterprise hardware support there is a mission critical support package which you can set up for as fast a 4 hours response time. This means the company will guarantee a maximum response time of 4 hours to work on your issue. It can be faster than 4 hours but 4 hours is the maximum time they will set to have a technician onsite at your location to begin working your problem.
