Hi! My sister's PC went dead and technician said the motherboard had to be replaced. When she got back the PC, the hard disk had been modified -- she didnt have all of her applications and her documents and personal stuff were in a new folder with her name. I wonder if if is necessary to install a new HD when the MB is replaced. Wouldn't the previous hard drive work with a new board? Thank you for your help.

What did the Technician have to say about replacing the HD? Normally you do not have to replace the HD when changing out the motherboard. I would be asking him why and did he notify you that the other HD was bad?

Thanks for your reply. That's exactly what I told my sister she has to ask the guy. But I wanted to be sure that replacing motherbrd did not require new HD. My sister doesn't know the technical stuff and wouldn't know what questions to ask. She just accepts what the guy says. The technician is supposed to fix things tomorrow (install the applications) and I plan to talk w/him. I'm guessing that for some reason he backed up her personal stuff, installed new drive and copied the stuff there. I'm quite upset that she went to this person rather to somebody I know and trust. Agai, thank you for your help.

When you change the motherboard, unless it is an exact replacement (Same Model and possibly version) Windows will not boot to the new hardware, so reinstalling windows would be required meaning that the drive would be wiped clean. Any Programs would have to be reinstalled, Data files such ask Photos, Music, Documents should have been backed up before the reinstallation of windows.

Thank you Jay. I suspected that as well. I'll know more when I talk to the guy tomorrow.
