For some reason whenever I right click a first time after I start windows or have been doing something else it is sooooo slow (ie 10-20 seconds for menu to pop up) and the same goes for opening up some other menus. Does anyone know what could be causing this and how I could fix this? Thanks

PS running Windows Defender and Symantec Antivirus which I assume might be causing the issues if you know how to adjust it to better my performance that would be awesome.

I'd assume some other process or application is using a most of your resources.
Start with Task Manager and see if you can identify the culprit.
How much memory do you have, and how much free HD space?

currently 2 gigs RAM and 180 gigs of HDD space open.

Usually the highest mem usage processes are:

    firefox (yay memory leaks)
    RTVscan.exe
    explorer.exe
    svchost.exe
    ehrecvr.exe

in that order, although firefox isn't present at windows startup.

RTV and ehrecvr are both Symantec processes, and I am not a fan.
Turn it off or uninstall it and see if you don't get an improvement.

Any recommendations on an antivirus / security suite to use in its place?

I use AVG Free, but Avast is OK too.

enronian, The problem may be caused by a bad context menu handler. Follow the instructions under "Method 2 - Using ShellExView to determine the Context-menu causing the problem" at the link below.

Right-click is slow or weird behavior caused by context menu handlers
