I want to run an additional OS. I was thinking of getting Xandros. Any suggestions on any other OSs worth my money or time? I took a look at Puppy, not sure though if that's for me. I can pay it doesn't have to be a freebie.

What will you be needing/using the OS for? Different linux distros are designed for specific uses, and many for general desktop uses such as Xandros, Ubuntu and SUSE. I have always liked Ubuntu myself.

The beauty of linux is that it's free, so you can always try a couple. You might like to also try http://www.zegeniestudios.net/ldc/ its an online test which baed on your answers tells you the best suited OS for you. You might also like to look at distrowatch.com which compares all of the distros.

So I rarely crash. I play a couple of games and I want my machine a little more stable. America's Army has a Linux version that I will run instead of the Windows version for obvious reasons.

kubuntu is amazing. gentoo is good with its emerge, kubuntu has apt-get so they are both good. i have to say, gentoo is a pain in the arse to install but kubuntu is nothing and its pretty powerful.

Gentoo is developing a graphical installer now, and is available on some of the latest CD's (not official releases yet) so if you want Gentoo check that out.

Kubuntu is just like Ubuntu but using the KDE desktop, and is very nice.

I am curious. With all these "from scratch" OS's which aren't Linux, how goes it all with software support? Linux has heaps (although it is a pain to get the right package often) how redily are these "hobby" OS's supported?

I just got Novell Suse, and a copy of Xandros. I'm not sure which one I want to dive in first. I'm thinking Suse, I hear it's up my alley as the IT manager of my company said. I think, I'll give it a shot. Thanks for all your help.
