    Hello -

I am helping my sister-in-law with a PC that she said was "running very slow". I found that no virus protection was installed so the first thing I wanted to do was install Norton Antivirus on the machine. After two attempts, each failed at the same spot after all the progress bars had filled in (100%) and the message says: "there are too many other processes running on the machine taking up resources for Norton to complete the installation". I had no other application running in the Task Manager and I had also stopped any service I thought was unneccessry.

When the PC boots up I see two pop up windows complaining that they cannot find the following DLLs:
    -- E6F1873B.dll
    -- D0CE0C16B1.dll

Also upon reboot, the machine was trying to launch TFTP2348 but didn't know what application to associate with it. I found it in the Windows StartUp directory and removed it - that message no longer occurs.

Please let me know what I should post for your review (I am familiar with HiJackThis but wanted to see if you need anything else run on the box before I send you that).

    Thank you in advance!

Please move hijackthis.exe into a permanent folder.

To create a permanent folder click My Computer, then C:\
In the menu bar click on File, New, Folder.
That will create a folder named New Folder, which you can rename to "HJT" or "HijackThis". Now you have C:\HJT\ folder.
Put your HijackThis.exe into that folder.

Run HijackThis and click Open the Misc Tools section
Click Open Uninstall Manager, Save list and save the log to your Desktop.
A list of programs will open in Notepad. Post the contents of the log here in your next reply.

Download (save) combofix from one of these two sites:
Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a log for you.

    Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall.

Please post a new hijackthis log, the uninstall log and the log from combofix in your next reply.

    If you use Opera browser
    • Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
      Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu.

Download and install AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 AVG ANTI-SPYWARE IS ONLY FOR SYSTEMS RUNNING WIN 2K and XP
(This is Ewdio 4.0 renamed. If you already have Ewido installed, please update to this version which has a special "clean driver" for removing persistent malware)
    1. After download, double click on the file to launch the install process.
    2. Choose a language, click "OK" and then click "Next".
    3. Read the "License Agreement" and click "I Agree".
    4. Accept default installation path: C:\Program Files\Grisoft\AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5, click "Next", then click "Install".
    5. After setup completes, click "Finish" to start the program automatically or launch AVG Anti-Spyware by double-clicking its icon on your desktop or in the system tray.
    6. The main "Status" menu will appear. Select "Change state" to inactivate 'Resident Shield' and 'Automatic Updates'.
    7. Then right click on AVG Anti-Spyware in the system tray and uncheck "Start with Windows".
    8. Go to Start > Run and type: services.msc
    • Press "OK".
    • Click the "Extended tab" and scroll down the list to find AVG Anti-Spyware guard.
    • When you find the guard service, double-click on it.
    • In the Properties Window > General Tab that opens, click the "Stop" button.
    • From the drop-down menu next to "Startup Type", click on "Manual".
    • Now click "Apply", then "OK" and close the Services window.
    9. Select the "Update" button and click "Start update". Wait until you see the "Update succesfull message. If you are having problems with the updater, manually update with the AVG Anti-Spyware Full database installer from here. Exit AVG Anti-Spyware when done - DO NOT perform a scan yet.

Reboot your computer in "SAFE MODE" using the F8 method. To do this, restart your computer and after hearing your computer beep once during startup [but before the Windows icon appears] press the F8 key repeatedly. A menu will appear with several options. Use the arrow keys to navigate and select the option to run Windows in "Safe Mode".

Scan with AVG Anti-Spyware as follows:
    1. Launch AVG Anti-Spyware, click on the "Scanner" button and choose the "Settings" tab.
    • Under "How to act?", click on "Recommended actions" and choose "Quarantine" to set default action for detected malware.
    • Under "How to Scan?" check all (default).
    • Under "Possibly unwanted software" check all (default).
    • Under "What to Scan?" make sure "Scan every file" is selected (default).
    • Under "Reports" select "Automatically generate report after every scan" and UNcheck "Only if threats were found".
    2. Click the "Scan" tab to return to scanning options.
    3. Click "Complete System Scan" to start.
    4. When the scan has finished you will be presented with a list of infected objects found. Click "Apply all actions" to place the files in Quarantine.

IMPORTANT! Do not save the report before you have clicked the Apply all actions button. If you do, the log that is created will indicate "No action taken", making it more difficult to interpret the report. So be sure you save it only AFTER clicking the "Apply all actions" button?

    5. Click on "Save Report" to view all completed scans. Click on the most recent scan you just performed and select "Save report as" - the default file name will be in date/time format as follows: Report-Scan-20060620-142816.txt. Save to your desktop. A copy of each report will also be saved in C:\Program Files\Grisoft\AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5\Reports\
    6. Exit AVG Anti-Spyware when done, reboot normally and submit the log report in your next response.

Note: Close all open windows, programs, and DO NOT USE the computer while AVG Anti-Spyware is scanning. If Explorer or other programs are open during the scan that means certain files will also be in use. Some malware will insert itself and hide in areas that are "protected" by Windows when the files are being used. This can hamper AVG Anti-Spyware's ability to clean properly and may result in reinfection.

Note: If AVG Anti-Spyware "crashes" or "hangs" during the scan, try scanning again by doing this:
    1. Scan one sector of the system at a time by using the "Custom Scan" feature. To do this select Scanner > Custom Scan and click on Add drive/directory/file. Browse to C:\Windows > System, add this folder to the list and click on "Start Scan". When the scan is complete, repeat the Custom Scan but this time, browse to and add the System32 folder. Then keep repeating this procedure until all your folders have been scanned. Make sure you include the Documents & Settings folder.

    2. If this still does not help, then turn the ADS scanner off while making a Custom Scan. To do this select Scanner > Scan Settings and untick "Scan in NTFS Alternate Data Streams". Then repeat the steps above for performing a Custom Scan.

    Hi Cybertech -

I am running through the Scan in safe mode now, but I have a quick question for you.

I did not perform the update on the Scan software because I am running these steps at my work and I don't want to put this "dirty" machine on the internet (and potentially infect others on the network). Can you tell me whether the problem I have will infect others on the network if I plug the bad box into the network? If you say that it won't cause others problems then I will update the Scan software and rerun that step before I post the log. If you are unsure I would rather just go with what we get in the report without performing the Scan update - sorry. Does this make sense?

I appreciate your help and will post the report when the scan completes (probably in the AM). Leaving for the night now.

    Thanks!

TFTP2348 is a potential worm and if it is still active the answer I would give you is yes it can travel across the network.

This will fit on a floppy and I would suggest running it on the infected machine as well. Do not change the default settings.

The report from Anti Spyware Scan was too big to paste inline and the file was even too big (898 KB) to attach. I have placed it on an FTP server where you can grab it:
ftp://nancy:[email protected] - I will change my password after we close this thread.

I have also attached a screenshot of the Stinger app after it ran.

    Thank you!

I've see the log now if you want to remove it.

    Delete these folders:
    C:\Program Files\Web_Rebates
    C:\Program Files\Hotbar
    C:\Documents and Settings\LocalService\Application Data\Hotbar
    C:\Documents and Settings\Kelley Cloonan\Application Data\Hotbar
    C:\Documents and Settings\Dennis\Application Data\Hotbar
    C:\Program Files\Common Files\lcnatrap
    C:\Program Files\Common Files\GMT
    C:\Program Files\BullsEye Network

    Empty this folder: C:\temp

This machine looks fine to put back on the network.

    Run Panda ActiveScan here

Once you are on the Panda site click the "Scan your PC" button.
A new window will open... click the "Check Now" button.
    Enter your Country.
    Enter your State/Province.
    Enter your e-mail address.
Select either Home User or Company.
Click the big "Scan Now" button.
If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it.
It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes).
When download is complete, click on "Local Disks" to start the scan.
When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the "See Report" button; then "Save Report" and save it to a convenient location. Post the contents of the Panda scan report in your next reply.

    You can delete these:
    OiUninstaller.exe
    GatorPatch.log

It looks pretty good, how's it running?

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system.
Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.

    Updating Java:
    • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6.
    • Scroll down to where it says "The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
    • Click the "Download" button to the right.
    • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
    • The page will refresh.
    • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
    • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
    • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
    • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
    • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
    • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
    • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
    • Then from your desktop double-click on the download to install the newest version.

    Hi Cybertech -

The machine seems to be running fine now (no dll errors and not as sluggish). I uninstalled the older versions of Java and installed the new version. When I try to run through the install of Norton SystemWorks 2006 it gets all the way to the end (progress bar is at 100% full) and then it pops up an error saying that there are resources running which are preventing it from installing.

Here is an updated HiJackThis log:

Run HJT again and put a check in the following:

    O2 - BHO: PCTools Site Guard - {5C8B2A36-3DB1-42A4-A3CB-D426709BBFEB} - C:\PROGRA~1\NJM_SO~1\SPYWAR~1\tools\iesdsg.dll (file missing)
    O2 - BHO: PCTools Browser Monitor - {B56A7D7D-6927-48C8-A975-17DF180C71AC} - C:\PROGRA~1\NJM_SO~1\SPYWAR~1\tools\iesdpb.dll (file missing)
    O16 - DPF: {C4925E65-7A1E-11D2-8BB4-00A0C9CC72C3} (Virtools WebPlayer Class) - http://a532.g.akamai.net/f/532/6712/.../Installer.exe

Close all applications and browser windows before you click "fix checked".

If that does not help end task on AOLSoftware.exe and see if Norton will finish.

    Hi Cybertech -

Prior to your last post I ran a custom install of Norton and unchecked the Norton GoBack feature (which was where it was complaining about the resources) and it finished fine. I don't need that feature on this machine anyway.

So, I did remove the items you posted for me to remove in HiJackThis and I consider this a success. Norton is installed, no more dll problems, no TFTP... trying to start up, and the machine is running fine. Here is one last HiJackThis log to show you where I stand but I think I am good.
