If you post a HijackThis log here, we can see which programs are running in the background that don't need to be.

You can download Trend Micro HijackThis 2.0.2 from here.

---------------------------------------------------------------

Every computer is different, and there isn't a set number of processes that should be running, but 61 processes is excessive for Windows XP.

Yikes! Your computer has a very bloated startup load. I'm surprise it's not running like a snail. Give me awhile to give you some instructions. I'll do it in a separate reply.

What is the processor type and speed? How much RAM is installed?

Click Start - Run, type in MSCONFIG and then click OK - "Startup" tab.

Remove the checkmark from:

GWMDMMSG

NvCplDaemon

Microsoft Works Update Detection

Adobe Photo Downloader

SunJavaUpdateSched

TkBellExe

QuickTime Task

iTunesHelper

ares

swg

Adobe Reader Speed Launch

Click Apply - OK, but don't restart yet!

Click Start - Run, type in SERVICES.MSC and then click OK.

Expand the Services window so you can see the list more clearly.

Double-click on:

Google Updater Service

InstallDriver Table Manager

NVIDIA Driver Helper Service

PrismXL

Change the setting from "Automatic" to "Manual", then click Apply. You have to do one at a time.

Close the Services window, then restart your computer.

When the small SCU window appears on the desktop, ignore the message. Place a checkmark in it, then click OK.

Run a new HijackThis scan, then post that new log here.

---------------------------------------------------------------

Your computer has several programs running in the background that I'm not familiar with. You may or may not be familiar with them, and you may or may not need them. My advice would be to make use of this site and decide whether they're needed or need to be running in the background.

Ok. I'm not to smart..only a few in the RUN/Startup were labeled as you have them.. I opened this forum and used my hijack list and figured out some more.. of the 11, I found 8..the three I did not find are...Microsoft Works Update Detection, Adobe Photo Downloader, TkBell.exe

Also there were 2 that had a checked check box but the Startup and Command areas were blank

next post is my updated Hijack list

Thanks Again

edit part..
OK I think i found all you mentioned and using your link I found a couple more that I unchecked..I'll study on some more later
also forgot to mention in SERVICES.MSC the ..InstallDriver Table Manager was already set to manual..may not be important but all info is good info..i think..??

TkBellExe will probably be listed as realsched.exe and is associated with RealPlayer. You can uncheck that one. RealPlayer can be started manually when needed. Personally, I have nothing to do with RealPlayer because it has privacy issues. I use Windows Media Player 11 for playing audio and video files and for viewing DVD movies.

Any of the startup list that are blank, you can uncheck them.

Are you using 56K dialup or high-speed broadband(cable, FIOS, DSL) for a connection? I see you're using a net accelerator and some other programs that appear to be associated with a 56K dialup connection.

Use the site that I gave you to edit your startup list some more. I'm sure that you can find others that don't need to run in the background. You might want to read what the site says about CTHELPER.

I am on hi speed broadband..(cable)
AND I will look into whether more of them need to be running..

I have no problem replacing Carter Hi Speed Security (F-Secure) If you think one of the freebies will do as good..This comes with my cable connect fee..so call it free or call it I will have to pay for it either way..lol.. I don't want to have to buy another one..

Thank You for the help..

I also was surprised at how many running processes are associated with Charter High-Speed Security Suite, but if you're getting it for free from your cable company and you're happy with it, go ahead and stick with it for now.

----------------------------------------------------------------

The smaller you keep the startup load, the better, so research and edit the rest of the list.
