When I am accessing my CD drive or when I am trying to download pictures from and to my CD drive - I get a "run time error" and then I clock on the pop-up box and everything disappears and I am back to my desktop.

Also I noticed I get this error when I am viewing pictures on my hard drive.

I had to reinstall Windows XP last week - and am now having this problem. What can I do to rectify this problem?

Post the full, exact error message.

Also run eventvwr.msc and look for errors in the Applications log that might be associated with it. Double click to view their description and use the "copy" icon on the description window to copy the error and paste it here.

>> what was the reason for the reinstall?

And:

Download and install HijackThis using the "self extractor". Run it and select "do a system scan and save the log file". Then copy/paste the contents of the log to a reply

I'm not sure if any of those errors are associated with the "run-time" error you asked about.

Two of them seem to result from a failed server connection; it's possible if you were updating something over the web it could result in a "run-time" error if the update was rudely interrupted.

The other has to do with works calendar, which may have been doing the update.

Try to capture the exact "pop-up" message you get and note what you are running or doing when it happens.

There is nothing notable in the Scanlog.

OK here goes. When I get this I am trying to access a folder with pictures from my digital camera.

Microsoft Visual Control
Runtime library
Runtime Error
Program: C:\Windows\explorer.EXE
Abnormal Program Termination

Then another pop-up appears:

explorer.exe-application error
The instructions at "0x013a296d" referenced at
"0x015afod0"
The memory could not be "read"

So I can view the pictures I just click on another area of the folder and then the pop-up goes to the task bar and I can view the pics. Then when I am finished I click ok on the pop-up and my desktop diappears and then comes back.

  (n) :(

This is a really tricky one to resolve; I've seen it a number of times associated with 3rd party programs which are damaged or incompletely uninstalled and which leave entries in the registry, usually involving the right click context menu, but not always.

Does this error occur when left clicking to open a folder, when simply mousing over the folder to highlight or select it, or when right clicking to get a context menu?

Does it occur ONLY in one type of folder? And can you move the pictures to another, newly created folder and not have the error occur?

Are you trying to view the pictures using the software associated with the cameral install, or can you view the pictures in Windows Explorer or another picture viewer without the error?

Did you remove and reinstall the camera software after the Windows reinstall? You may need to do that.

Thanks for your help. We have removed Roxio and now would like to know what software to install. We heard that Windows XP has such software built into it and we would like to know where to find it. By the way, we were having trouble with Roxio and hadn't redownloaded it after re-installing Windows.

So it was Roxio that was causing the error?

Yes Windows does have burning software built in -- you only need to copy or drag and drop basically, to use it (consult the help files for complete info). BUT it is much slower and I don't believe provides all the file type support that Roxio or others do (for example, .iso files).

I have Roxio and have had no problems with it, but it does need to be updated from whatever might have carried over with an XP upgrade.

You mentioned that Windows XP has a cd burning program included? Where do I find it and what is the name of the program?

I uninstalled Roxio and reinstalled it. I then put those pictures on a CD and it worked fine. Hopefully that was the problem.

I'll let you know.

Lol, you don't "find" it -- you just do it. :)

Put a writable CD in the drive and copy something to it. Works like any copy or drag and drop operation -- just takes a lot longer.

If all seems well, you can mark the thread "Solved" using the Thread Tools menu when you're ready.

Dah!!! Of course - I know how to do that. What was I thinking? It must be old age. I will mark this as "solved". I really appreciate all your help. Have a great New Year....
