Sometimes the icon is missing in the system tray.

I can get it back but next boot it's missing again.

On occasion it does show but not often.

Any ideas on why this happens and how to get it to shoe all the time?

larry31, Go to the link below line 5 (keft column) and click on "Restore Safely Remove Hardware Icon" to download a vbs file fix.

To use the VBS Files: Download .vbs file and save it to your hard drive (you may want to right click and use Save Target As). Double
click the vbs file. You will be prompted when the script is done.

According to me, It's a hardware setting issue. Go to hardware menu in control panel and check the status of it.

    Thanks guys!!
I already knew about fix's mentioned above but was really interested if any one here could give me a reason why the normal icon goes missing. I have had Windows XP home installed on my old computer and never experienced the icon missing.

After building my new computer and reinstalling Win XP and started reinstalling my programs is when I noticed the icon missing.

It happened sometime after I installed Avast free antivirus.
I suspect it has something to do with auto updates when Avast starts up on boot??
If I shut off auto updates in Avast, the icon shows ok.
( Have uninstalled and cleaned registry of any Avast remnants)

If I don’t install any antivirus programs, the icon seems to show up more consistently.

I really don’t like to run with out antivirus so I guess I’ll have to use “USB Disk Ejector” program to turn off Safely Remove Hardware.

I just thought someone would know why the icon is missing.

I tried to access your link but get pop-up "Internet Explorer cannot open the site"
    "Operation Aborted"

The page does come up but as soon as it appears, the pop-up comes up over it.

I can use the same address in Google Chrome browser and it works fine. It's just IE that gives pop-up.
