I'm trying to back up OE folders on my husband's Acer laptop (operating system XP). How do I do this?

    In OE, go to
    Tools > Options > Maintenance
Click the Store Folder button and copy the directory path in the popup into Start > Run.
An Explorer window will open - the DBX files are all the Folders (inc mail).

If you just want to save the mail as individually readable mail, select the ones you want and drag them into a folder on your desktop (or wherever).

I've been using Inachis e-backup ver.1.42 for years and years. Works very well with OE. I can't tell if its still shareware or not and frankly I was surprised it was still available but I found it here if interested http://www.softplatz.com/Info/Inachis.html --it just backs up everything in OE, even custom folders.
