when I run scandisk I get a message saying scandisk has restarted 10 times because another windows program is writing to the disk. I get this message even when I run scandisk in safe mode when the only thing running is explorer. what is going on?

Try clicking Ctrl > Alt > Delete and END TASK on everything EXCEPT EXPLORER and SYSTRAY while in regular mode, then run scandisk and Defrag.

That did the trick, thanks. But what I would like to know is why do I need to do this now when I never had to before? I don't mind shutting everything down but I wonder why all of a sudden this is happening.

It could be that you have added one of the programs you Ended Task on since the last time you ran defrag and it is the one that keeps kicking on when you try to defrag. I always use END TASK before I SCANDISK or DEFRAG, out of habit. And I always run SCANDISK before I run DEFRAG, out of habit.

Glad you got it working, Have a nice day!

I don't have the answer to that question, but it may have something to do with Systray.exe. Just a guess!
