Thanks in advance to anybody who can help me.
The computer on which I am having a problem is a communal workstation at work. Somebody seems to have gotten some adware or something on friday while I was out and isn't here to give me details today so I don't have the complete story as to where they got it etc. What I do know is:
the computer runs on xp, the browser is internet explorer.
The main problem is a "search bar" that appears where the search, history, favorites bars appear on the left of the browser. The search bar can be closed but reappears whenever you follow a link on a page. It say "Related Searches" and then lists a bunch of casino sites. When I look at my history it shows up as being associated with the internet address: http://yupsearch.com/sb.php?qq=bed
It also might be related to the site:
www.popupsearches.com/sidesearch.htm
I performed the hijackthis thing and got the following log:

Logfile of HijackThis v1.99.0

Any help would be much appreciated. I would classify myself as somewhere between a beginner and intermediate in terms of this kind of stuff. Cheers

Try the program WinPatrol, it's freeware at www.winpatrol.com... you can pay extra for all the features if you'd like to. After installing and running the program, click the "IE Helpers" tab and I bet you can spot the offending "Helper". I haven't had any problem deleting any "IE Helper" yet, and doing so has fixed a lot of problems similar to yours.

Let us/me know if this helps... it certainly can't hurt, and I find WinPatrol extremely handy in dealing with ad and spyware.

Thanks Wallyworld. Was able to solve the problem with your help, but ended up having to reinstall windows anyway as the person responsible for creating the problem had made the problem worse by trying to fix it himself and changing aspects of the registry in the process.
cheers
