    Hi,
I am just trying to get my system as tight as possible to reduce my browsing vulnerability and as a starting point was working down the list in the General Security sticky forum suggestions up above here.

When I try to download the MVPS hosts file a box comes up with "your security settings dont allow this file to be downloaded".

    any help much appreciated.

    cheers,
    Navale

One protection mechanism is Sandboxie (free) . It contains all browser based attacks into one folder and the attack tool cannot escape into drive C, and you can wipe that folder anytime. It is a popular counter measure against web based attacks.

    You could try resetting IE.

Tools > Internet Options > Advanced

Have you tried disabling your antivirus temporarily?

    well that was interesting....
disconnected the scans and firewall then
the same warning came up but when i clicked OK the save as box came up to direct the file to a location. I hit save and the McAfee bar came up at the bottom and said that hosts had not been downloaded.

    It hasnt been downloaded.

Seems like McAfee isn't completely disabled, and still probably interfering.

I tried it again and same result as before.

Also, some other strange things going on.....e.g. when I try to access the IE SPYAD website, it says there are network connection problems.

whats going on with this machine???

    thanks again,

1- Please click HERE to download HijackThis.

    2- Run the program.

3- Click on the Main Menu button if not already there.

4- Select Do a system scan and save a logfile.

5- Copy and paste the scan log from Notepad into your next reply. Do not attach it.

6- Do not "Fix" anything unless advised to do so.

    Hi,
Thanks for your help. As HT was being downloaded a message came up saying it could not access hosts file for some reason.
How do I take a snapshot so I can show you things like that?

Why won't it open? Any error message?

Then, Run IE9 Without Add-ons and try downloading the MVPS Hosts file again.

You can also uninstall SpywareGuard. It's been replaced by SpywareBlaster quite a while ago. I use SpywareBlaster on my machines without a glitch. I'd even forget about the MVPS Hosts file if I were you. SpywareBlaster does basically the same thing, without affecting websites, like the MVPS Hosts file does sometimes.
