    Hi.
I have at least 2 processes using most of my cpu, services.exe and svchost.exe. However, if I reboot, other problems may occur such as:
    - loss of my SigmaTel C-Major Audio
    - a message "The instruction at "address varies" referenced at "address varies". The memory could not be "written"".
    - Also when I click on Google search results I'm very often redirected.

I've read enough in this forum to know I'd be shooting in the dark to try and fix this myself.

When I registered I included the Tech Support Guy System Info and I also ran HijackThis and included the log file below.

    Hi Terry,
You can't actually blame services.exe and svchost.exe since they are only a support shell for several services that you have initiated.

Try trimming your startups down in a systematic manner using any of the fine startup control freewares available for that. You'll likely find the offending one that way and can set it to be more sociable, such as manually started rather than automatic. Then again, you may find some resource hogging program that you can uninstall. You may even discover that none of the above helps and that you may have a virus or malware that is the problem but you need to eliminate the easy stuff first.

I use Quick Startups but there are many others:

    Get it Here

From your HiJackThis file, nothing jumps out but I'm no expert so stick around for a better opinion. There is a possibility that you have a search hijack based on your comments but I'll leave that to the experts here.

services.exe and svchost.exe are system related. So it is not good to stop them. But I understand that there could be some services you really don't need. Most of these services will start when you start the machine. If you want to disable unwanted services, type "msconfig" in "run". It will open a window. From there, select the "services" tab. All the services which start when you start the machine are there. Disable ones you don't need. This will disable those services until you start them manually. But make sure what are you disabling, because disabling something really need will not generate a good result.

Well, I had to reboot because my McAfee stopped running and now services and svchost are behaving but spoolsv.exe has taken over almost 100% of the cpu.

I've never seen anything like this before and it's very frustrating.

Here's the new HijackThis. There are some differences but I can't explain them:

The main reason why your computer is running like a turtle is because it has a massive number of programs and services that are auto-loading and running in the background. Many of them don't need to auto-load and run at all, and others can be manually started as needed.

That bloated startup needs some serious trimming down if you expect to get any noticable speed and performance increase in your computer.

Click Start > Run > type msconfig

    Select the Startup tab.

    Uncheck the following items:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [IntelZeroConfig] "C:\Program Files\Intel\Wireless\bin\ZCfgSvc.exe" Related to Intel Corp. Zero Config MFC Application, part of Intel's ProSET utilities and installed by the drivers for many of Intel wireless network cards - essential to the proper functioning of many of the Intel ProSET utilities (but not all) and these System Tray ProSET utilities are a must if you are using your wireless connection, if only so you know when the signal is fading or dropping. The problem is that, in some PCs, ZCFGSVC can be incredibly badly behaved : taking up to 100% of CPU time and therefore resulting in an extremely slow PC, preventing the installation of software or Windows updates, or causing "Not Responding" or "End this Program" shutdown problems. If you experience this, try first the very latest drivers from Intel or your laptop manufacturer. If that still does not solve the problem and you have WinXP/2003, try setting the "Wireless Zero Configuration" service to disabled.

    O4 - Global Startup: Status Monitor.lnk = C:\Program Files\Brother\Brmfcmon\BrMfcWnd.exe

    Reboot the computer.

After rebooting, when the small System Configuration Utility window appears, ignore the message. Put a check mark in that window, then click OK.

    ===================================================================

    Run HijackThis again.

Select Do a system scan only.

Put a check mark on the following entry:

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyServer = :0

    Click Fix checked.

Well, before I try to finish the last steps I thought I'd better post this in case I don't get back for a while.

I had to reboot 3 times to get here. Each of the first 2 times I received the following error:
"Generic Host Process for Win32 Services has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience."

Also, I could only open a few apps before everything froze and I couldn't open or close any apps. I couldn't open Windows Task Manager until this attempt and everything looks good as far as cpu usage.

Sooo, I'm posting this now and going back to attempt to finish the remainder of your suggestion. Hopefully I'll be back soon with the results. I can't help by think that Win32 error message may be a clue because I received it even before performing the msconfig.

Thanks. I appreciate all your help. Terry

After you trim down the startup list in Start - Run - MSCONFIG - OK - Startup(tab), per Phantom010's instructions, and restart your computer, do the following in order to trim down the services list:

Click Start - Run, type in SERVICES.MSC and then click OK.

Expand the services window so you can see the list more clearly.

Double-click on these service entries one at a time to open their properties window:

    Ati HotKey Poller

Brother Popup Suspend service for Resource manager (brmfrmps)

    BrSplService (Brother XP spl Service)

Canon Camera Access Library 8 (CCALib8)

    DSBrokerService

    Google Updater Service (gusvc)

    HP Port Resolver

    HP Status Server

    InstallDriver Table Manager (IDriverT)

    Java Quick Starter (JavaQuickStarterService)

    Pml Driver HPZ12

    SolidWorks Licensing Service

    SupportSoft Sprocket Service (ddoctorv2) (sprtsvc_ddoctorv2)

If "Startup Type" is set on Automatic, change it to Manual, then click Apply - OK.

If "Startup Type" is already set on Manual, close the properties window.

After you're done, close the services window and then restart your computer.

    Thanks everyone!

Sorry it's taken a while to respond. Everything seems to be working much, much better. I did have a google hijacking problem on top of it all and I ended up running a trial version of Hitman Pro 3.5 that I found at cnet.com. It spotted a few problems and they've been corrected. Now I'm hoping nothing else is lurking in the wings.

    Thanks again. Awesome support group.

    Terry
