Is it possible to install iTunes on a PC running XP-Home so that all of the Apple services only run on startup of one particular user?

We just got a new Acer notebook PC for the family and our daughter will be using it most of the time. We each have our own Windows login. Our daughter will be getting a new iPod for Christmas and I suspect we will need to install iTunes on the new computer in order for her to use all of the features of the iPod. When I use the notebook, I would rather have most of the CPU cycles doing what I want, not what Apple wants.

When I got my IPod I went into the msconfig and manually removed the checkbox's beside anything Apple related to prevent system slowdown. The Itunes program can be launched manually each time your daughter wants to attach her IPod to the computer.

Most installations would ask you if you want to do it on the current user only or all users, though it's been a while since I have installed iTunes.

And yes you will need to install iTunes for the iPod. If it doesn't give you the option to do only one user, you can disable the services in MSCONFIG as mentioned by Sting.

Thank you both for the Current User and MSCONFIG options. I can handle those without too much worry. I am glad to hear I should be keep the Apple iTunes services from running from my XP startup without having to resort to REGEDIT (which still scares me a bit). I will try them if I have no choice other than to install the Apple software.

Since I have Winamp installed on the new computer, I may first see if the ml_ipod Winamp plugin from www.mlipod.com will do everything that my daughter wants to do on her iPod.

    Thanks again.
