So one of our friends mentions how amazing Skype is and now my wife has to have it and can't live without it.
We're running both the laptop (wireless N or Ethernet) and desktop with WinXP SP3. What are the Pros & Cons of installing\using Skype? Resource intensive? Security nightmare? Greatest thing since sliced bread?
Is there a good how to out there where should I start?
I havent had any security issues with it and I have
had it installed for years.
Doesn't use a lot of resources.
I use magic jack for phone because I can connect
an actual phone to it.
I have a USB phone connected for skype.
It's ok for what it does and if she has a lot of friends on skype,
she can talk to them free, computer to computer.
Here is the help page on features. https://support.skype.com/en-us/category/PROD/
I use Skype when I travel overseas, to call back home. It has worked flawlessly from numerous countries, mostly 3rd world. Sometimes I need to call other phones, and have found Skype's prices to beat most everyone else. Skype to Skype conversations, as well as video and IM , are encrypted at a high level, a nice feature if you are paranoid (which you probably ought to be).
Magic Jack, mentioned by leroys1000, is a nice feature so you can answer skype calls from any phone in the house. D-Link makes a similar product, available from Skype.
From an internet usage standpoint, MagicJack and I think Skype uses a bit of the bandwidth so if you are on a low bandwidth internet package, then you may experience voice quality issues, but other than that, the features are really good, especially if companies that uses Skype for communication is really good.
I used it for calling 1-800 numbers from work. No issues there. Obivously you can use the messenger for communication but also 'calling' to another skype member is free. And I would assume the pricing is not bad either... never needed to use it in the continential US though.
Thanx to everyone for the input. Looks like I'll be Skyping soon!
