my pc has a slow connection so i thought i'd clean it up. when i ran hijackthis i checked all the boxes, clicked fix and got a protection error near the end of the list. when i restarted the pc i tried again and after clicking fix watched the curser get towards the end again, and on the 180 search assistant entry there i got the same protection error.

then i tried it again with 180 search assistant unchecked, and it freezes on the entry before that one.

is it bad to check all of the boxes? doesn't it basically just set the browser back to original?

have to go now, but will be back tomorrow.

thank you

here's the log.

You checked them all?????

Hijack This is an advanced tool, and therefore requires advanced knowledge about Windows and operating systems in general. If you delete items that it shows, without knowing what they are, it can lead to other problems such as your Internet no longer working or problems with running Windows itself. Never fix the items yourself if you're not familiar with the program - post a log and have an expert review it.

You're definitely infected. Did you restore all the items you removed?

Well, you have three running programs that you HAVE to remove:
soproc.exe ( that is nasty advertisment bug)
Sacc.exe (also advertisment)
WEATHERBUG.EXE (really anoying and slows down your pc big time)

If i were you , I would just clean re-install XP, but that might be too much work.
Some of those are really hard to get off. have you tried Microsoft's Spyware removal. Works pretty good on my machine. Removed lot of nasty stuff that other spyware removal tools missed.
Removing it one by one won't help you much since those programs got deep into your registry too, and even experts are careful editing registry files.
I recommend: backup and then fresh install, or microsoft antispyware removal.

OMG, NEVER check ALL the boxes! MOST of the stuff you see is critical to Windows XP running at all! As Cheeseball said, restore everything, and then wait until Cheeseball has analyzed your log and given you instructions as to what to remove.

You're lucky your computer even boots.........

Download KillBox here: http://www.downloads.subratam.org/KillBox.exe
Save it to your desktop.
DO NOT run it yet.

Rescan with Hijack This.
Close all browser windows except Hijack This.
Put a check mark beside these entries and click "Fix Checked".

R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SurfAccuracy] C:\PROGRAM FILES\SURFACCURACY\SACC.EXE

O9 - Extra button: Related - {c95fe080-8f5d-11d2-a20b-00aa003c157a} - C:\WINDOWS\web\related.htm

O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: Show &Related Links - {c95fe080-8f5d-11d2-a20b-00aa003c157a} - C:\WINDOWS\web\related.htm

* Double-click on Killbox.exe to run it.

Put a tick by Standard File Kill.
In the "Full Path of File to Delete" box, copy and paste each of the following lines one at a time:

C:\PROGRAM FILES\SURFACCURACY

Click on the button that has the red circle with the X in the middle after you enter each file.
It will ask for confirmation to delete the file.
Click Yes.
Continue with that procedure until you have pasted all of these in the "Paste Full Path of File to Delete" box.
Killbox may tell you that one or more files do not exist.
If that happens, just continue on with all the files. Be sure you don't miss any.
Next in Killbox go to Tools > Delete Temp Files
In the window that pops up, put a check by ALL the options there except these three:
Recent
History
Now click the Delete Selected Temp Files button.
Exit the Killbox.

Finally go to Control Panel > Internet Options.
On the General tab under "Temporary Internet Files" Click "Delete Files".
Put a check by "Delete Offline Content" and click OK.
Click on the Programs tab then click the "Reset Web Settings" button.
Click Apply then OK.

Empty the Recycle Bin.

Reboot, post a new log.

when i start i keep getting a registry cleaner, every time i delete it from the startup group it comes back. if i try to uninstall from add/remove programs it says invalid install.log file but then continues to a web page that says it's removing the software but never does also having a hard time downloading java in order to do a housecall scan, but at least housecall will go for long enough to tell me i need java.
