    Hello all,
I'm hoping someone can help me. This is my first post. I have been fighting my internet speeds for several weeks now, and Verizon wireless has not been any help. I have a HP Pavillion running XP Media Center. I use a wireless usb modem like you would on a laptop, only I use it on a desktop, so it never moves. I have great cellular signal with it, but my speeds stink up the place. I test at speedtest.net. I have run spybot S&D to try to clean up any spyware (didn't find much), I have run Windows Definder. I have done all the normal disk clean up, scan disk, ect. Here is my HijackThis file:
Any ideas to try would be extremely appreciated.

Yes, I am using a usb card. I should be getting around 700kb/s with bursts up to 1.5-2M. I have gotten those speeds, but right now I am seeing around 130k-300k download. I have been working with Verizon, but I'm not really getting anywhere. I have a great signal, usually around 85-95% signal strength. I have my usb card attached to my computer via a 6 foot extension cable. I cannot attach the usb directly to my computer because of location (basement) my signal goes to zero. I have to have my card up higher.
Thank you for helping. I'm about to pull my hair out.

Remember that downloads are measured in bytes and those speeds are in bits.

Well, that's slow all right. I'd suspect you're simply in a poor coverage area.

Did you previously get the advertised service using the 6' USB extension cable? If so, I doubt that the issue is with you, but make sure all the connections are secure. In case of a little corrosion I'd remove/reinsert firmly each connection 3 or 4 times.

I am in a good coverage area. I have a tower about 3 miles from me, and generally have a signal strength in the 90 percentile. Verizon has confirmed that my signal is good. I have noted that like flipping a switch, my speed comes back. Three times in the last week, at around 12:30 - 1AM all the sudden my speed is great. Last night for example at about 1 AM, I was pulling 1.5M. and then this morning I was back to the speeds noted above. I did the ipconfig/flushdns as I have seen in other posts when my speed come back. I was in hopes that was the fix, but it was a fluke.

Sounds like some congestion in their network serving the tower if it's not signal strength. I know that the speeds vary widely depending on exactly where you are.

Finally getting to the bottom of this speed problem. Talked to Verizon today about my trouble ticket that got put in a week ago. Wanted to see what the status was. Got a hold of a guy that said that the tower is overloaded in my area. Thay are planning an upgrade on Sept. 1, which should enable it to keep up with the load on it. Now, I'll just have to grind through the next 3 months of slow and flucuating speeds.

in looking at my Hijack report, is there much that I can shut down to improve the speed of my system overall? I've looked in the msconfig under start up and I don't see most of these things running. If I look at the processes through Cont/Alt/Delete, there really isn't any resorce hogs, but I'm wondering if all this stuff has to be running or if I can shut it down. If I do want to shut it down, how do I go about it? Does it have to be done in msconfig?

I think the tower congestion is really your problem. You can work on the system, but nothing jumps out to me that would make a huge difference.

Well, it sounds like it is up to Verizon at this point. I really appreciate you looking at my problem. Thank you for your time.
