Hi Everyone

l have a Acer Aspire Vista Basic desktop computer that is driving me mad.

lt is so slow doing anything.

Yesterday l did a de-frag and disc clean up, l have half my disk space free.
l have also done a complete scan

Would upgrading to Vista Premium and or increasing memory make a difference.

Any advice greatly appreciated

Pam:

Answer the question in post #2.

Most computers that I've seen that come with Windows Vista Basic are low-end models that come with a low-end Sempron or Celeron processor and only 512 MB of RAM.

What's the complete model number of that Acer Aspire? That'll allow us determine how much RAM it supports and what type module it uses.

Upgrading to Windows Vista Premium will require more RAM than Windows Vista Basic. Either version requires at least 1024 MB, but preferably 2048 MB.

Hi Kenny and Flavellee.

Thank you both for answering my post

Sorry l haven't replied sooner but my son and his family arrived.

My compter has 512 MB memory ram.

On the front of the tower it says

Aspire M1100 -Y97Z

l can't read anything off the back as l am wheelchair bound and needless to say useless with the workings of a computer.

Pam:

From what I can determine at the Acer site, the Acer Aspire M1100 desktop supports up to 4096 MB(4 GB) of RAM.

It uses DDR2 PC2-5300 or DDR2 PC2-6400 or DDR2 PC2-8500 modules.

http://support.acer.com/acerpanam/desktop/0000/Acer/AspireM1100/AspireM1100sp2.shtml

It's my guess that desktop has a single 512 MB module or 2 - 256 MB modules installed.

I recommend replacing whatever it has with a matching pair of 1024 MB(1 GB) modules.

Right-click COMPUTER and then click Properties.

What does it show for the processor type and speed?

I'm guessing it's an AMD Sempron.

Let's see what's installed and what's auto-loading in that computer.

A bloated startup load will impede overall performance, especially in a low-end computer with minimal RAM.

Go here and click the green icon to download and save HijackThis 2.0.2.

Close all open browser windows first, then install it in its default location: C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis.

Start it to open its main window, then click "Do a system scan and save a log file".

The scan is quick and should be finished in 30 seconds or less.

When the log file appears, save it.

Return here, then copy-and-paste the entire log here.

---------------------------------------------------------------

I'm going off-line for a few hours.

lt is AMD Sempron

Processor 3800=2.20 GHz ls that the speed?

Do you recommend taking out the module it has now and replacing it with 2 1GB Modules?
Will it not work with just adding a 1GB Module to what is already installed?

No in fact upgrading to Premium might even slow it down as it adds more resource robbing features.
Frankly I find it hard to believe any retailer worth knowing would sell a unit like this. It is hopelessly under powered for processor and memory. You should go to a minimum 2.0 Gb ram and I would replace the processor as well depending on what it can hold because you can buy dual core Phenom processors under $100 that will make a huge difference.

Hi Rich-M

Thanks for replying.

As you can guess l don't know anything of the why's and wherefore's of the computer just how to use it on a basic understanding.

All l wanted it for was doing my family history and uploading photo's from my camera or phone and printing them out, surfing the net and emailing.

l have done as Levellee asked and am about to have a go at copy and pasting the results into my next message.

l will re read your post and take in what you said but as l am on a limited income cannot afford to go out and buy another computer

Pam:

Thanks for submitting a HijackThis log.

Considering the minimal amount of RAM and the low-end processor that you have in that computer, you need to trim down the startup load as much as possible.

Some of the startup entries and services entries don't need to auto-load and run at all, and others can be manually started via the start menu or desktop icon when needed.

Follow my instructions carefully and take your time doing it.

---------------------------------------------------------

Click Start - Run, type in MSCONFIG and then click OK - Startup(tab).

Remove the checkmark in the entries that I've highlighted in bold text.
