I see a lot about installing Vista on a separate partition in order to be able to dual boot, but can it be installed on a separate hard drive and still dual boot?

I have XP on one drive, and will be puting another drive in to install Vista on . . would like to be able to boot to either Operating System

Yes you can do this however vista will write the BCD files to the root of your boot drive so if xp is installed on C and you have another drive say D, you will still have some vista files on C.
