IBM / Lenovo might sell you a set of system recovery disks.

If you have a folder, called i386 that contains hundreds of files, with names such as filename.DL_ , I can tell you how to make your own installation CD. Might not solve your problem, however, because my theory is that your operating system files are corrupt.

    You could have bad hardware.
Run memtest86 www.memtest86.com for 8+ hrs, or until an error appears.

You can test your CPU using OCCT.

Check with Lenovo [ or IBM ] for computer diags.
Run HDD diags; either from IBM / Lenovo or the HDD's manufacturer.

No test is 100% accurate. There false +s [ problem reported when none exists ] and false -s [ problem not reported when problem actually exists ] in every category of technology & medicine of which I am aware.

Check IBM / Lenovo's web site, for HDD [ hard disk drive ] diags.
OR find out the brand, model & model # of your lappy's HDD, go to that HDD manufacture's web site; download & run the HDD

run chkdsk /r from the recovery console.
Install the RC, or download rc.iso & create a bootable RC disk.

You will need 3rd party disk burning software, such as Nero or Sonic / Roxio, to make a bootable disk from a .ISO file. I have read about but never used ImgBurner.

    See #11 at http://forums.techguy.org/windows-xp/882028-my-update-problem.html
for information about the recovery console.

    I have no other ideas.

    Best of success.
