This post is in connection with the AOL and IE problems post but I want to have a separate post for my Hijack This log.

The problem is that IE is generating errors when certain pages load (seems to be no pattern to the type of page - that is: secure, lots of images, lots of links etc). This problem translates to the AOL browser as well since it seems to use the IE program (somehow) to access the Internet. With AOL, the page loads then immediately closes.

I restored my version of IE back to 5.0 then reinstalled SP 6.0 to see if that would help, no dice. I'm using a Win98 OS with AOL 7.0

As a side note; this forum will not load in AOL or IE under the current circumstances (Using the Mozilla browser as I post)

Help would certainly be appreciated :)

Here is a dump of my Hijack This log:

Oh, well. For now Mozilla is working but it is just as slow as Netscape was!

    Run ActiveScan online virus scan:
    http://www.pandasoftware.com/products/activescan.htm

Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button.
A new window will open...click the Check Now button.
    Enter your Country.
    Enter your State/Province.
Enter your e-mail address and click send.
Select either Home User or Company.
Click the big Scan Now button.
If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it.
It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
When download is complete, click on My Computer to start the scan.
When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location.
Post the contents of the ActiveScan report.

    Hi Cheeseball81,

I went to the Panda site but unfortunately IE 6 won't let the site open. I tried it with Mozilla and when I clicked on scan PC I got the message that it will only work with IE 5.0 and above. :(

I don't thinkPanda Software had a downloadable free version of their scan software.

This is really getting frustrating because there seems no rhyme or reason to which pages IE decides it can't open.

    Let me try a few things and I'll report back . . . .

Their online scan is free, not sure why it won't work.
    See if this one will:

Run Kaspersky online virus scan here: http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner

When given the option, choose the "Extended database" for the scan.
When it's finished, save the results from the scan and post them here.

This is getting downright frustrating!!!

Kaspersky will not open with IE and when I use Mozilla, I get as far as the 'Accept' 'Decline' page and when I click on 'Accept', nothing happens. The online scan page does specify that it uses MS Internet Explorer to scan the computer . . .

I did run Xoftspy and it came up with 4 data miner programs (Alexa, WurldMedia and another I'd never heard of). I removed them but it has made no difference.

Those scans won't work with Mozilla. They are only designed for IE.
Everything in the log looks okay. This may just clearly be an IE issue.

Just wanted to let all the helpful people and others with similar problems know that I got the problem solved.

Seems that the msvcrt.dll file had gotten corrupted and it needed to be removed and replaced with a 'good' copy.

**I had a bit of trouble figuring out how to remove and replace it, but once done, I have no trouble accessing and web sites now :)
